as makers how much time is spent on the things we don’t see?
how often are you asked about the time it takes to make something?
more often than not i’m sure it is just a casual enquiry - a way into starting a conversation with the maker, an insight into your working practice, your methods & time management - & we all have our ways of working - our ways of making things work - even when it looks as though they’re not going to - for now, not this time.

this week i’m focussed on cutting out - it’s quite mindful - i concentrate - measure twice - or five times - cut once, & all that.
but as i measure & cut & pile the cut pieces, planning & organising the piece with a product it occurred to me that these three or four days, so vital a part of my process, could so easily be overlooked in the costing & evaluation of the finished item.
it is a question i find tricky to answer sometimes - but now i’ve calculated the perfect answer - & taking all things into consideration -

how long did it take you to make this item?

only about 65 years!

tick tock!

having spent most of may enjoying myself, am thinking this month is definitely time to get down to some work!

i used to start stock piling in May - thinking ahead to the ‘c’ word - .pewter & i would torture each other with a countdown to christmas - it was always a bit of a competition to see who would mention it first!

206 days!
that doesn’t sound much does it?

i’m writing lists & tomorrow i’m getting my bestest scissors out & starting on a cutting out session!

snip snip!!!

have you noticed all the elder blossom?
it looks like a bumper crop this year - time to forage
!
i’ve been printing & punching & stitching my little blossom card so it must be time to share this cordial recipe - i think you can make elderflower champagne too - must try & remember to investigate that - put it on my to do list - maybe for next year…

ingreedyments ;
25-35 elderflower blossoms - remove the stalks & give a quick swish in cold water to remove creepy crawlers!
2 or 3 unwaxed lemons
1x unwaxed orange
2kg granulated sugar
citric acid - optional

first pick your flower heads - 25 to 35 blossoms - early in the morning - so they’re full of pollen - choose a tree away from busy roads & traffic & as high as you can reach - away from dogs!!!

zest & slice the unwaxed lemons & one unwaxed orange - cut the fruit into generous slices.
place in a saucepan with 2kg granulated sugar and 1.5 litres cold water.
heat gently, until the sugar is dissolved.
remove from the heat.
remove the stalks from the flower heads & submerge in the syrup.
add 1tsp citric acid (optional), this will help to preserve the cordial.
cover the pan and leave to infuse for at least 24 hours.

sterilise enough glass bottles to contain your cordial by putting them through the dishwasher on a hot cycle or washing in hot, soapy water, rinse and leave to dry in a low oven.

line a colander with a clean tea towel, or muslin, & place over a large bowl or pan.
ladle in the cordial to filter it then discard the flowers, the lemons & the orange.
pour the filtered cordial into a jug &, using a funnel if necessary, fill the bottles.
seal & label.

you can drink the cordial straight away - over ice with tonic - or soda - & it will store for up to six weeks in the fridge.
i can hear ice twinkling in the glass…
…almost summer!

chin chin!!

trying to get back into my stride this week after ten days of doing practically nothing but enjoying life!
I’ve been celebrating a [rather scary] birthday - & even my own Mum can’t quite believe the heady heights of these numbers - & she was there!!!

it’s been so wonderful - am feeling the love - & so lucky to have so many fabulous humans in my life.

meanwhile, back in the real world, theres a baby boom of May babes arriving - i’m getting back into production mode making my &knit roll top baby boots - i’m so out of pompom practice i missed the felt & needled my finger by accident - but only once…

i keep being asked about the pattern for these baby boots - where is it from?
my head is the answer!
i do speak Knit & i’m seriously considering making it available to buy.
i’ve made so many little shoes & baby boots i think it’s safe to say it’s been thoroughly tried & tested!

all the likes for green!
the most versatile colour, to my eyes - from almost white to almost black, & every shade in between, there isn’t a time of year when green won’t be featured somewhere in my work, colours & ethics.

i love to hear customers talking about the colours i use - the look of the studio & the feeling it creates - a certain easy calmness & simplicity.

this week a new customer was talking to me about my work - she made some very nice observations including a comment about …’everything being so well made & so simple!’
& then quickly apologising for it!

a completely unnecessary apology of course - if simple means lacking unnecessary adornment, frills & fussiness, & means plain & straight forward, direct, uncomplicated, intuitive & concise, plain in style or elegant, then simple is more than a compliment to me!

of course you will never be every persons cup of [green] tea, & there is a wide & varied choice of gorgeous handmade work but, simply put, if you get &made, if you understand what makes me tick & you share my thinking - thank you - for the likes, the follows & the shopping - & the conversation - &made wouldn’t be without you!

M A Y B E . . .

…i’ll get round to doing some actual work today! i’ve had a real bitsa kinda week & today is proving to be no exception.

i have a pile of these little ongoing jobs - they sit on the side of my desk & sometimes fill the end of an afternoon - or provide a little hiatus between projects - even give me a little breathing time - when i get stuck & need to be busy, but continue thinking!

this most recent panel has been inspired by my artist, jeweller, florist & forager friend - he visited my studio recently wearing a very desirable stitchery panelled waistcoat - so beautiful it made my fingers itch needing to try out the technique.

here’s my playtime piece - maybe it will lead somewhere…

a nice surprise to start the week - this little wooden darning mushroom found its way to me today!
i’ve never seen a mushroom with a metal band before - it puzzled me - i thought it might be magnetic?
a needle keep?
pin storage?…
…erm, decoration?

no - there had to be a reason for being - on further investigation i saw one with a spring! lovely, old wood, worn & needle marked with an old metal spring around the edge of the mushroom & then it all became clear!
remove the metal band, place the mushroom underneath the area to be repaired, & hold in place with the band!

genius!

reduce, recycle & repair - the darning mushroom.
the perfect, traditional tool for hole mending, they became popular household items in the late 1800’s & onward. darning mushrooms & eggs, often passed down through families - became miniature heirlooms.
my darning egg belonged to my great grandma & is over 150 years old, it looks like a little plum & sits perfectly in my hand!
for another today then!

makes me wonder about the history of this one - who, where, when? a little history - i’ll never know.

thank you lovely start to my working week!

‘ L I V I N G the D R E A M ! ‘

recently a visitor to & design centre stepped into my studio telling me that i’m living the dream!
it was a lovely day, sunshine on the glass roof, lighting up the corners of the building, giving the impression of actual warmth - even if it can still be a bit nippy! i acknowledge it must look like the ideal way of life - & sometimes it is! - but it can be very precarious - we makers waver wildly on a tightrope between feast & famine, freezing & frying!
in the middle of winter on a wet wednesday afternoon it’s hard to believe that days like these will roll around again but here we are, beautiful spring days, studios full of lovely things, makers always ready to stop & talk about all manner of makery; ceramics, glass, gold & silver, paint, print, pewter, textiles & wood.
so yes, today, we are indeed living the dream - come & see for yourself!

&
open six days a week
monday to saturday - 10 ‘til 5.30
& every second sunday of the month - 11 ‘til 5
with the on oak street

T O D O L I S T

recently i’ve been leaving work feeling a bit disappointed with my outputtage - can’t exactly put my finger on why - maybe there’ve been a lot of distractions, or i’m over anticipating how much i can achieve in a day or perhaps i’ve been talking too much…
…but I can hardly believe that!!!

so, yesterday i decided to take some direct action & wrote a list.
i like a list - it only had about three things on it & by home time all three were ticked!

one was routine & soon finished -
cropping & trimming & punching &made swing tags,
then three little neck knits, the finishing - disappearing ends of yarn & attaching pompom buttons, sewing in labels & adding a tag,
& lastly, most fiddly & time consuming, trimming a new batch of handmade ‘fabrinated’ buttons.
so pleased with this batch - they use up some trims & offcuts from my recent soft silo making & leave behind a fab negative space trim pile to play with.

i‘ve just noticed how the list feeds one item into the next - that’s really satisfying as i’ll be needing these buttons soon as i have almost sold out of zipped pockets, so today’s list?
cutting out!
it sounds like a single item but as with all these makery recipes - it’s far from that!

have a good day each - with ticks!

personally i’m not a fan of bank holidays - they seem to cause unnecessary work flow interruptions - i’d much rather choose time off for when it suits me but hey, i’ve had a very short week & so not feeling very satisfied with my out puttage!

but it was lovely mid week - warm & sunny - so nice to be in my studio & free of three thermal layers & double socks!
perfect weather for a bit of desktop gardening so i cultivated a new crop of cactus pincushions - there were only two or three left after mother’s day this year & it seemed like just the right amount of work to fill two shelves & what was left of the week.

this weekend is my scheduled break from the studio & Lou is in charge for the next three days, & it’s weekend too so our opening hours are;

friday & saturday 10 - 5.30
