Vimto Trifle.
Lancashire Omelette.
Banana and Salford Honey Pudding.
Lancashire Rarebit.
His Mum’s Lancashire Hotpot.

Born in Stockport in 1969, Robert Owen Brown is a true champion of the North. The clear, strong flavours of his food reflect the heritage of his native North West; its farms and foraging grounds; its rivers and offshore fishing.

After honing his craft at catering college in Bury, he refined his skills at The Midland before moving through a string of standout kitchens: Brasserie St Pierre, The Bridge, The Angel, Lounge Ten (now 10 Tib Lane), and most memorably, the iconic Mark Addy.

Combining autobiographical laughter and fifty lip-smacking dishes, Crispy Squirrel and Vimto Trifle is the perfect gift for the food lover in your life.

The Northern Art Workers’ Guild and the Arts and Crafts Movement in Manchester.

This beautifully illustrated book examines the impact of the Arts and Crafts movement in Manchester and the overlooked history of the Northern Art Workers’ Guild from its formation in 1896 through its demise in 1912.

Unlike the London-based Art Workers’ Guild, it had active women members throughout.

This book tells the history of a northern craft revival that was neither rural, nor London-focussed, but an essential component of the Arts and Crafts movement located in the heart of industrial England.

The authors also examine the legacy of the Guild, in the later work of the Red Rose Guild of Artworkers and the lesser-known Manchester branch of the Design and Industries Association.

Illusion and Change is the sister book of Lost & Imagined Manchester.

Written by the inimitable Jonathan Schofield, a Manchester tourist guide, writer and broadcaster.

Beneath and behind the city we walk through is a past, present and future city. This book takes a trip into this metaphysical other place, conjuring pictures of things that might have been, things that were and things that could be. If this sounds deep don’t worry, there are a lot of laughs and curious stories on the way.

There are more than fifty buildings and schemes covered in the book. Some made international news such as the rebuild after the IRA bomb in 1996. Others were sensations such as when Picasso’s Guernica appeared in a Manchester garage in 1939.

There are halls, sculptures, commercial buildings, churches, shops, underground canals, bridges, theatres, views, valleys, cliffs and the story of the changing skyline. Oh and travelators.

There are two hundred pictures, maps and images, many of which have never been seen in books, exhibitions or even online before.

Manchester Lit & Phil has been broadening minds and horizons since 1781 and so we are delighted that Jonathan Schofield will be giving members (and non-members) a fascinating talk tomorrow entitled, “Imagined Manchester: what our city could have been.”

This engaging presentation is informed by the extensive and fascinating research which went into two of his Mcr Books publications, ‘Lost & Imagined’ and ‘Illusion & Change’. The talk and the books both showcase extraordinary images of imagined city schemes, stories about unrealised architectural projects and provide deep insights into Manchester’s urban development.

This includes remarkable unbuilt designs including a part-Eiffel Tower in Piccadilly Gardens, a Deansgate travelator, a communications tower behind Piccadilly Station, a mini-Parthenon on Upper Brook Street, and potential city boulevards and heliports.

Tomorrow, Thursday, 23rd January, 2025 at 7pm at Friends’ Meeting House, Mount Street. £15 (non members).

Books will be available to purchase on the night or both Lost & Imagined and Illusion & Change are available via our website (link in bio).
