Overview
The Chaos Magnet Spinner is a precision‑machined desktop demonstrator that showcases the strange and fascinating behaviour of coupled magnetic systems. Two three‑spoke rotors sit opposite each other, each fitted with magnet spokes arranged in a deliberate polarity pattern — NSN on one rotor and SNS on the other. When you spin one rotor, the second begins to move seemingly of its own accord, pulled and pushed by the shifting magnetic fields.
The result is true chaotic rotation: sometimes synchronised, sometimes repelled, sometimes transferring momentum abruptly from one wheel to the other. No two runs are ever the same.
How it works
Each rotor carries three embedded magnets arranged in a polarity pattern that ensures the wheels interact in a constantly changing magnetic landscape. As one wheel spins, the opposing poles alternately attract and repel, creating a dynamic torque exchange.
This interaction produces:
Chaotic motion — irregular, non‑repeating rotation patterns
Sudden energy transfer — one wheel can stop dead while the other accelerates
Magnetic coupling without contact — motion driven entirely by field interaction
Long spin times — low‑friction bearings and balanced spokes
Like our Chaos Pendulum, the behaviour is governed by real physics — but feels almost magical.
