Bloomsbury gives to gain.

Today we are celebrating the women who lead and the women who quietly open doors for others. On International Women’s Day, we are making a simple pledge: each month we will give something that helps another woman gain, whether it is a mentoring hour, an introduction, or a skills share. When one woman finds a way in, many more follow.

“Real progress is contagious. Every time we give time, access or encouragement, another woman gains the confidence and the chance to lead.”

Join us. Tell us what you will give to gain and tag someone to pass it on.

World Book Day invites us to reflect on Bloomsbury’s deep literary roots. Writers such as Virginia Woolf and E M Forster shaped the character of the neighbourhood we care for today, where quiet streets and historic garden squares continue to inspire readers.

Bloomsbury’s independent bookshops remain at the heart of this culture. Treadwell’s offers a distinctive and thoughtful selection, while Judd Books and Skoob Books provide shelves filled with second‑hand and specialist titles.

Enjoy your new discovery with time in a local independent café or a peaceful moment in Russell Square Gardens.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, commemorating the end of World War II in Europe.

Bloomsbury, with its rich history and vibrant community, played a significant role during the war. The area was home to many notable figures and institutions that contributed to the war effort. For instance, Senate House, part of the University of London, was used by the Ministry of Information, which was responsible for propaganda and information dissemination during the war. This building, along with other MOI-related buildings around Russell Square, was central to the British war effort.

Additionally, Bloomsbury’s intellectual and artistic community provided support and refuge during the war. Many residents endured the hardships of wartime, contributing to the resilience and unity of the area.

To mark this special occasion, Bloomsbury will host a series of events and activities including Wiener Holocaust Library Exhibition: Visit the “Traces of Belsen” exhibition at the Wiener Holocaust Library, which marks 80 years since the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The exhibition runs from April 10th to July 10th, 2025
