History of Kashmiri Copperware:
One of the most famous ancient arts of Kashmir is copper ware items. The copper smiths of Kashmir have maintained the traditional work and the quality of these products.
The traditional copper ware of Kashmir is created by three processes of Shaping, Decoration ( Naqqashi ) and Tinning ( kalal ) They use hammers and chisel to engrave copper ware items of household utility like bowls, frames, samovars, flower vases, tea sets scent chests, ornamental picture frames, cigarette lighters, lemon set etc.
Floral styled, geometrical, leaf and calligraphic motifs are engraved or embossed on copper to cover the entire surface with intricate designs which are then oxidized, so as to stand out better from the background. The work on copper ware items is known as “naqashi” and determines the price of the object as does the weight.
Copper ware is preferred because it is durable and it has excellent characteristics. The ageless use of copper bears testimony to its myriad virtues and everlasting appeal.
