Much as I'm not keen on the wasps trying to rob out the hives in late summer, I can't deny that their nests are a work of art.
This is likely the early starter nests made by queen wasps in spring before the colony expands. Each little hexagonal cell is carefully built from chewed wood pulp — essentially “paper” made by the wasp herself.
Empty hives, roofs and nuc boxes are perfect sheltered spots for them to begin building. By summer, a nest that starts this small can grow to thousands of workers.
