Kings Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon.
Most people don't know that. Most people haven't been there. Most people who drive through the Sierra Nevada go to Yosemite and turn around.
Kings Canyon sits 35 miles down a road that ends at a river. Not at a visitor center or a gift shop or a viewpoint — at a river. The road just stops and the wilderness begins. Mule deer graze in Zumwalt Meadows while canyon walls rise 8,000 feet around them. Somewhere in Grant Grove, the General Grant Tree — second largest living thing on Earth by trunk volume — has been standing in the same spot for 3,000 years.
The Kings Canyon National Park patch is for the ones who drove all the way to the end of the road.
