July 20, 1969: man walks on the Moon. 🌕 But did you know a 2,400-year-old coin also celebrates a lunar legacy? This silver Stater of King Archelaos I of Macedon (413–399 BC) depicts Apollo, ancient god of the sun and music, on its obverse. Apollo – the namesake of the Apollo 11 Moon mission – and a galloping horse on the reverse make this coin a perfect bridge between past and present

“ Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité!” 🇫🇷 This hefty silver Écu of King Louis XVI, 1789 carries more history than meets the eye. Minted in the fateful year 1789 – when the Bastille was stormed on July 14 – this coin witnessed the dawn of the French Revolution. The obverse shows Louis XVI’s bust, but change was in the air! By that summer’s end, the French monarchy would be on borrowed time. ✨ Quirky fact: The reverse of this Écu “aux rameaux d’olivier” bears the French royal arms surrounded by olive branches of peace – ironic, given 1789 was anything but peaceful in France! Lost Treasure – A July Shipwreck Story

In July 1743, the Dutch East India ship Hollandia sank off the Scilly Isles, taking down chests of Spanish colonial silver coins to a watery grave .
This is one of those tales where coins become time capsules. The 1742 Mexico City 8 Reales (the famous “Piece of Eight”) pictured here is the same type of coin recovered centuries later from that wreck  .

On board, these coins – minted under Philip V of Spain – were bound for trade in the East Indies, but Neptune had other plans. 🌊 Quirky fact: When the wreck was found in 1971, divers surfaced thousands of these silver coins, still gleaming after 228 years underwater ! Imagine the astonishment: treasure from the deep, each coin a frozen July 1743 moment. . This International Treasure is your reminder that history sometimes sleeps under the sea.
