Confession…. Never knew Spooner Oldham played on a Liberace record! Suspect this one has some kind of cult status, but I’ve not seen it before

Droney avant-grade accordion isn’t a sub-genre I’m overly familiar with, but this record is interesting. As an aside, some bloke in an Edinburgh record shop told me once that this label, Pro Viva, was a failed side project of Manfred Eicher of ECM fame. At the time of writing, I’ve been unable to substantiate that claim

Lorne Lesley ‘Bloodshot Eyes’.

Lorne Lesley was plying her trade as a cabaret singer in Manchester in the 60’s. Here she takes on the Hank Penny/ Ruth Hall penned Wynonie Harris classic. No-one beats Wynonie on it, but I’m very fond of her take. Does a great Louis Armstrong impersonation (towards the end of this record). Depending on the publications you choose to read, you may also know her as Mrs David Dickinson (of Bargain Hunt and suntan fame).

I used to keep it on my own shelf, but I don’t do that anymore (don’t get High on your own supply and all that). It’s somewhere in the shop I think… if it’s not, it will be soon
