Today is service day for the heart of our roastery.
Once a year, our 15kg Loring Falcon gets some serious TLC with its full annual service.
It’s the machine behind every batch of Carnival coffee we roast — and keeping it in brilliant condition is about much more than looking after an expensive piece of kit.
Today it’s being carefully checked, cleaned, serviced and calibrated. The components that work hard roast after roast are inspected, airflow and temperatures are checked, all those areas we can’t reach in our everyday cleaning get some attention, and we make sure everything is running just as it should.
And all of that makes a difference to what ends up in your cup.
Consistency — so the coffee you love tastes just as delicious from one roast to the next.
Precision — so we can control heat and airflow and bring out the sweetness, acidity, body and character that makes each coffee what it is.
Care for the green coffee — some of the coffees we roast have travelled thousands of miles to reach us and represent months, sometimes years, of work by the producers who grew them. When they finally arrive at Carnival, we want to do justice to all of that work.
Efficiency — a beautifully maintained Loring helps us roast efficiently, using less energy while producing the clean, expressive coffees we love.
There’s something we really like about this annual ritual. Taking a day to stop roasting, open up the machine, get into all its inner workings and give a bit of love back to the piece of kit that works incredibly hard for us all year.
Because great coffee isn’t only about finding extraordinary beans.
It’s all the little things that happen afterwards too — the people, the decisions, the tasting, the tweaking, the cleaning, the maintenance and the care.
All part of getting that lovely coffee into your cup.
