Coastal interiors don’t have to rely on obvious nautical references to evoke a sense of place. The most enduring schemes often take a more nuanced approach, using texture, tone and thoughtful layering to create spaces that feel relaxed, collected and deeply refined.

Rich contrasts run throughout the room, from the black check and subtle stripes to the crisp white bedding and deep red velvet cushions. Each pattern and colour bounces effortlessly off the next, adding depth and warmth while maintaining a sense of balance. The result is a layered interior that feels both elevated and inviting - sophisticated coastal style, interpreted with restraint.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ian Mankin.

Ian’s career began in the 1960s in London, where he worked as a designer of high-end leather goods, working with icons of music and fashion such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones – developing a strong sense of craft and style that would go on to shape his later work.

In 1983, he opened his first textile shop in Primrose Hill, introducing a fresh perspective to interiors, transforming simple, utilitarian fabrics into something quietly elegant and enduring. His approach was guided by a belief in honest, practical materials, from traditional utility cloths to timeless stripes, all designed for everyday living and made to last.

Since acquiring the business from Ian in 2008, we have been proud to carry forward and build on the character and distinctive design handwriting he created.

We send our sincere condolences to his family and to all who knew him.
