This week, we are diving into our numismatic glossary to highlight the true master craftsmen of the mint: the "Engraver." The person who actually cuts the dies from which coins or medallions will be struck. He engraves into the metal.

Banknote of the week: Denmark 10 Kroner 1943 P31 Unc - https://coincraft.com/denmark-10-kroner-1943-p31-unc

For this week’s spotlight, we are looking at an absolute beauty of mid-century Scandinavian engraving that managed to escape the friction of daily commerce during one of the most turbulent periods in European history.

Here is why this 1943 Danish 10 Kroner note deserves a closer look:

The God of Commerce: The reverse features a stunning neoclassical, laurel-wreathed profile of Mercury, the Roman god of trade and communication, wearing his iconic winged cap.

Wartime Continuity: Printed in 1943 during the German occupation of Denmark, this note represents a fascinating moment where the Danmarks Nationalbank maintained its precise institutional design and standards despite immense geopolitical pressure.

National Heraldry: Guarding the central vignette are three stylized lions rampant pulling straight from Denmark’s historic coat of arms, surrounded by a delicate, multi-colored anti-counterfeit underprint of woven wildflowers.

The Border: Notice the heavy, organic framing on the front? That's stylized seaweed ornamentation, paying direct homage to Denmark's deep maritime heritage.

Finding a wartime circulating note is always a treat, but finding a specimen that survived in pristine Choice Uncirculated (UNC) condition with crisp edges and vibrant linework is a true collector's victory.

This about shilling sized silver coins are from Bolivia in South America are struck in silver about 140 years ago. Bolivia is not the richest country in South America so they did not issue all that many silver coins. They have a Llama and a mountain with the sun over it on one side and the denomination on the other side. They are in Very Fine condition and difficult to find.

Today, we're diving into the intriguing world of 'Weak Strike' for our weekly glossary. When not enough pressure is used to strike the coin, the design will appear to be weak and an uncirculated coin will look like a used example.

Banknote of the week: Bank Scotland £20 Polymer P-New Queensferry Crossing Commem Unc - https://coincraft.com/bank-scotland-20-polymer-p-new-queensferry-crossing-commem-unc

When the Bank of Scotland released a polymer £20, they decided to issue two different varieties. There was what would become the regular issue and then there was the Polymer £20 issued to commemorate the new Queensferry Crossing over the Firth of Forth which opened in August 2017. (P-New) These Queensferry Crossing £20 notes were considered a Special Edition because the number printed was limited. The front followed the regular design with the portrait of Sir Walter Scott to the right, a view of the Bank’s Headquarters on The Mound in Edinburgh and a holographic foil stripe featuring the image of Fame, found below the pediment on The Mound. The back is dominated by the span of the bridge over the Forth. There were several records set in its building. During construction in 2013 it made the Guinness Book of Records with the longest continuous underwater concrete pour. The balance cantilevers were recorded as the longest ever. Uncirculated and scarce Queensferry Crossing Polymer £20 notes. Very Limited availability

Weekly Trivia: While everyday items in the Solomon Islands are bought with standard dollars, traditional ceremonies and community disputes are still settled with an ancient form of currency: dolphin teeth. Alongside shell money, they remain a vital part of the local "kastom" economy.

Cabo Verde or, as we call it, Cape Verde, is a small remote island group in the Atlantic Ocean off Africa. It was formerly a Portuguese Colony, that became independent in 1975. You almost never see coins from this country.

One of our contacts found us a small group of commemorative 100 Escudos from 1990; these coins were issued to honour the visit of Pope John Paul II. These are about half crown sized coins, very thick and in Uncirculated condition.

On one side is the Pope with outstretched arms and on the reverse are the Arms of Cabo Verde and the value. The coins are Uncirculated with a minimum of bag marks. With the Pope’s death, many collectors are trying to complete their collections of his coins. Also this is a very difficult country to get anything from and this coin is scarce.

We turn our attention to another term in the field of numismatics this week, known as the "Harp Strings". In the reign of Charles II and some other reigns the number of harp strings on the reverse varied, possibly to indicate which dies were being used.

During the Second World War, Greece was occupied by the Axis powers. It was also a time of rising inflation, as revealed by this 10,000 drachma note dated 1942(P120) A young couple is depicted on the front while on the back we find an illustration of the ancient Treasury Building in Delphi, Crisp Uncirculated.
