In the 1980s, the s*xologist Shere Hite was on TV a lot, uttering words seldom heard there before: “or**sm,” “masturbation,” “cl****is.” In 1976, her book “The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study of Female Sexuality” had become a huge best-seller. Its main takeaway was the then startling revelation that most women achieved or**sm not by means of vaginal in*******se alone but through manual or oral stimulation of the cl****is. Hite, who died in 2020, at 77, was, from the late 70s into the 90s, quite famous. The books she wrote not only sold in the millions but were translated into multiple languages. When she began the research for “The Hite Report,” she was a struggling grad-school dropout living in a basement apartment with faulty heating. After it was published, she could afford to buy an apartment on Fifth Avenue, in the same building as Gene Simmons, of Kiss.
