Talking to about her debut book, Bertie and the Ginger Cat:

What was your inspiration for this sweet story?

‘The inspiration behind the story was an image I discovered of a huge, abandoned glass house. It was very old, with a twisted metal frame and had broken glass panes with trees and plants bursting out of it. I started to imagine a magical world hidden inside and what secrets it could hold. I think the whole book grew from three images in my head - the cover, the koi pond scene and the swimming lagoon image. Artistically I knew exactly how I wanted them to come out and then the rest of the story grew around it’.

Did you know?

This is Caterina Metti’s third picture book. On her process she says:

‘I found myself at a crossroad, in an uncomfortable situation. Something in my work process was making me tired and I was craving creative change. I decided to explore digital techniques, I swapped my paint brushed for different tools, in a different medium. This opened a world of possibilities and pushed me outside my comfort zone, helping me expand my professional practice. I think that working in illustration is a long, never-ending journey. You are never truly done, it's never over. Experimenting puts you on the right path to keep growing.’

An igloo! Such a clever interpretation by illustrator Caterina Metti

On adding humour to the narrative, Caterina Metti says:

‘I’m very happy that a dose of humour comes across in my work. I don't think I ever chose humour as a communication tool. It happened naturally because I love making people smile. Humour is, above all, a tool for life—which can help my characters face tricky emotions such as sadness or anxiety. Of course, humour doesn't solve anything but having a laugh surely helps!
My illustrations are filled with humour because it’s useful to me too; at times, illustrating work can be very hard and tiring, adding a dash of humor always helps me push beyond that. It always works in my favour.’
