Cecil Court

Cecil Court Welcome to the original page for Cecil Court - London's best street for books, maps & prin

Now the largest concentration of specialist book, map and print shops in London, Cecil Court has a rich history (read about it on our website) and has been renowned for years among bibliophiles; you will also find experienced dealers in antiques, jewellery, modern art, coins and medals. This is the page to keep up with what's going on in the street: festivals, signings and day to day life!

From our new shop in Cecil Court, our specialists have assembled a catalogue shaped by a striking imbalance: books on war are plentiful, while books on peace are harder to come by.

War, often presented as a theatre for heroism, reveals in reality only horror. Peace can be easily overshadowed until its absence is most deeply felt. An absence we are witnessing at this very moment.

Our catalogue ties these many voices together to demonstrate that reading is inherently an act of resistance.

View of exhibition.

Emanuel von Baeyer Cabinet presents a new online exhibition of prints by Francis Seymour Haden (1818 London - 1910 New Alresford).

The English printmaker Haden championed the Etching Revival in Britain in the late 19th century and was one of the founders of the Society of Painter-Etchers as well its first president. Our small display of etchings and drypoints by the artist from 1859 until 1864 focuses on views of London.

Just in from Atramentous Press:
To Glimpse A Hollow Hill by Daniel Yates

In 1691, the Scottish minister Robert Kirk penned The Secret Commonwealth, the foundational source text on the lore of fairies. However, this seminal work remained unpublished for 120 years until Sir Walter Scott released an incomplete version, which shaped most subsequent editions. Over time, various publications have either presented the text in modernised form, presented it only in its archaic form, or retained only portions of the original language offering abridged versions that obscure Kirk’s full intent.

In To Glimpse a Hollow Hill, Yates presents, for the first time, the complete and unabridged text of The Secret Commonwealth in both its original form and a fully modernised version. This edition offers unparalleled insights and accessibility into Kirk’s work, alongside a comprehensive history of the manuscript’s transmission through time. Yates provides a faithful rendering of Kirk’s words, correcting errors that have persisted for over two centuries, and includes extensive analysis and commentary. This definitive volume also illuminates previously misrepresented aspects of the Seers’ magical practices and the true nature of the various Sith, restoring Kirk’s vision in its entirety.

This drawing depicts an older man smoking a cigar whilst reading a book. His long beard frames his exceptionally detailed face. The use of light and shadow through hatching is masterful and gives the piece its dreamlike, symbolist quality.

We are very pleased to announce the recent acquisition of a lost portrait of Lord Strange, 5th Earl of Derby (1559-94). Lord Strange was a Member of Parliament in the Elizabethan era, as well as a patron of prominent writers Christopher Marlowe, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare.

This acquisition has recently featured on the British Art Journal’s website. To read the article, and to find out just how exceptional this discovery is, visit the link in our bio.
