Signs of Greatness

From trade union marches to working with Jeremy Deller on the National Gallery’s double centenary, Ed Hall is the country’s foremost banner maker. You might have seen his pieces at Venice Biennale or the Southbank Centre, but you are equally likely to have seen an original Ed Hall held up in the background as a media-friendly union leader is interviewed by journalists.

We were deeply saddened to hear the news of Sir Brian Clarke's death last week.

Known for his large-scale stained glass and mosaic projects, he spent five decades championing the medium, both by creating luminescent artworks that push the boundaries of stained glass, and by collecting seminal pieces by other artists. Clarke’s own connection to the zeitgeist helped him turn a medium oft-associated with ancient churches into an art form of astonishing modernity.

Today, we're delving back into a wonderful Crafts Magazine profile of Brian by Malaika Byng (), visiting his museum-like London home in 2021. The full piece is available to read here: https://bit.ly/3TpY1q3

Jacqueline Poncelet: 'Knowing why you’re alive is a wonderful thing'

Ahead of this Friday's 'New Ceramics' panel discussion in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield, we leafed through our archives to find this interview with Jacqueline Poncelet, one of the three panellists, by Natasha Levy, former Associate Editor of Crafts. Read the full article for free on our website for the next seven days via https://bit.ly/4kQ7Lpq.

Friday's talk coincides with The Hepworth Wakefield’s Elizabeth Fritsch retrospective, and will focus on Fritsch’s cohort of 'New Ceramic' graduates from the Royal College of Art in the 1970s. In-person tickets are available, and there's the opportunity to book to watch the live stream too.

Book Club | Norwegian Crafts, discussing The Vessel: Craft in public spaces

Join us for this online conversation hosted by Yasmin Jones-Henry with Vessel Magazine editors Ida Højgaard Thjøme and Marianne Zamecznik as they discuss The Vessel’s eight issue, Craft in Public Spaces.

This edition explores how craft enters public spaces, serving as a platform for care, activism, and community through materiality. Despite its longstanding yet often overlooked role in public art, the documentation of craft in these spaces remains incomplete - a theme explored in this issue.

Airing: 7-8pm Tuesday 29 April online, via Zoom.
Free for members, £9.15 for non-members.

Head to the ‘What's On’ link in bio to book.

Visteria Foundation’s (.foundation) inaugural show at Milan Design Week, ‘Romantic Brutalism. A Journey into Polish Craft and Design’, set out to introduce the international design community to Polish craft and collectible design.

Marking 100 years on from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, ‘Romantic Brutalism’ explores the ongoing historical influence of brutalism, romanticism, decadence, folk, and art deco in contemporary Polish design culture.

Step inside the colourful studio of self-named ‘scultpographer’ Daniele Papuli () some weeks ago as he prepared for his Dilmos Gallery () presentation of his paper furniture and objects created for Milan Design Week 2025, which closed yesterday for another year.

Papuli, known for his sculptural collaborations with Missoni and Hermes, has been dedicated to the exploration of paper as a means of expression since a workshop in 1993 in Berlin introduced him to manufacturing sheet paper.
