🇯🇵 Japanese decorative manhole covers are a uniquely charming blend of public infrastructure and civic art. Introduced nationwide from the 1980s, they transform ordinary street fixtures into detailed, colourful designs celebrating local identity. Each municipality commissions its own patterns, often featuring regional flowers, wildlife, festivals, landmarks, or historical symbols. Some are hand-painted, others cast with intricate reliefs, turning pavements into open-air galleries. Beyond aesthetics, the covers helped make costly sewer projects more publicly acceptable by fostering local pride. Today, they’ve inspired collectors, photographers, and even “manhole cards,” proving that thoughtful design can elevate even the most overlooked parts of daily life.
