South Asian heritage month…
A Journey of Empires Part 2!

A thank you to my Grandparents – the adventurers and risk takers who took a chance to bet on a better life and took a voyage across seas again, arriving here to start their own empires with only a few pounds in their pockets.

Thank you for all you have done, I carry you all within me and I can only hope I do justice to you all.

You were brave, fearless, and courageous and dared to love deeply and dream big in this journey of life, please forgive me for times when I have not been these things,

I used to find it hard to explain what being Mauritian meant, it needs no explanation, we are all one and that is beautiful.

So to all across the world, celebrate your roots, we all have many and in different places.

To all those before us, we are here, we see you.

SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH

18.07.22 - 17.08.22

This year’s theme being the JOURNEYS OF EMPIRE goes back to empires from the Mughal to the British.

A different date has been given to celebrate each of the countries in South Asia…

However please let us not forget the indentured labourers forced to travel outside of South Asia, some of which were my own ancestors.

The beautiful island of Mauritius is a gem in the Indian Ocean and part of the African continent – perfectly showcasing itself as a blended nation.

Growing up, trying to find Mauritius on a map was a challenge as it was not always labelled!

For somewhere that was not recognised on an atlas was a place many indentured labourers were brought from South Asia. Both children and adults were either kidnapped, forced or misled into the promise of a better life.

This beautiful volcanic island, home to my parents and grandparents was once the British colony's largest recipient of indentured migrants from South Asia, China, Africa.

We may not be able to trace our ancestors accurately yet we can honour them as they moved across seas with courage, hope and strength… they were the change makers shaping our destiny.

Being such a mixed bag of customs and culture … Mauritians were born

A melting pot of culture and customs and religion has created such a haven. As the great Maya Angelou said – ‘In diversity there is beauty and there is strength’.

Even though we cannot trace footsteps back, we honour them and the paths they walked. 👣
