All of us at The Bike Project are rooting for Jill Scott (Jill Scott - JS8) on her incredible challenge for Sport Relief!

We are delighted that she will be coming through Birmingham, where one of our workshops is. Here, we refurbish bikes for refugees and people seeking asylum, giving them freedom and independence. We are proud that we are one of the charities supported by Sport Relief, enabling us to help more people.

Watch out for The Bike Project on the BBC at 6:30pm on Midlands Today, on BBC One, where you'll find out more about one of individuals we work with.

📢 And he’s off! Today, Inua Ellams begins his 50km Choose Bike Unity ride – a ride about unity, connection and showing up for people rebuilding their lives in the UK. ❤️

Along the way, he’ll be stopping off at Women for Refugee Women, Breadwinners and Young Roots - all incredible organisations supporting refugees and people seeking asylum - before finishing at The Bike Project’s Deptford workshop.

Supported by Choose Love and working closely with The Bike Project, the ride is about more than the distance covered. It’s about coming together and supporting people from all walks of life to access freedom, community and independence. 💪

We’ll be sharing updates throughout the day over on our stories, so keep an eye out, cheer him on at each stop and help power the ride by supporting his fundraiser via the link in bio.

And stay tuned - we’ll be sharing a full recap and conversations from the journey later this month 👀

As part of Volunteer Week, we're celebrating all our amazing volunteers, including those in our Birmingham workshop who have spent the last six months learning mechanics, refurbishing bikes, and supporting our bike donation sessions! ✨️ Their enthusiasm, humour, and willingness to get stuck in have made them a valued part of the workshop community. One of those volunteers is Morteza, who even managed to build his own bike along the way:

“My experience as a volunteer at The Bike Project was really great and very valuable. From the very beginning, everyone was really kind and welcoming, especially Ahmad, who helped me a lot.

Ahmad supported me both technically and in terms of explaining things clearly. Whenever I had questions, he would patiently help me out and made it much easier for me to learn new skills. His friendly attitude also helped me feel more comfortable and connect better with the rest of the team. He is truly professional, kind, and supportive.

Even though there weren’t many electric or hydraulic bikes to work on at that time, I still had the chance to work on other types of bikes and improve my skills. For example, the bike you can see in the picture is something I built almost completely from scratch myself, and I’m still using it now. Overall, it was a really meaningful experience for me, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to volunteer and learn at The Bike Project.”

Thank you, Morteza, for everything you've contributed over the past few months. It's been fantastic to see your skills grow, and we're delighted that you're still riding the bike you built yourself! 🙌

Our bike buddies recently came together to explore quiet cycle lanes, hidden green spaces, and iconic landmarks from the Old Surrey Canal to Lambeth Palace and beyond – making the most of the sunshine and good company! ☀️🚲

Bike Buddies pairs refugee bike recipients with local volunteers to go on rides together, helping people build confidence, feel more connected to their community, and find a sense of belonging in their new local area.

Because of your support, refugees like Talia can say: “My Bike Buddy helped me become more confident with cycling […] having someone patient and supportive really helped me feel more comfortable riding my bike. Now I can cycle to these places myself.”

Thank you for making moments like this possible 💜

📢 On Thursday 4th June, poet and playwright Inua Ellams will be undertaking his Choose Bike Unity cycle ride, fundraising for The Bike Project to help more refugees and people seeking asylum access freedom and independence through cycling.

Choose Bike Unity ride is Inua’s longest ride yet. But it’s also about something bigger: people and organisations coming together to support refugees rebuilding their lives in the UK. 💪

Along the way, he’ll be connecting with some incredible refugee organisations: Choose Love, Women for Refugee Women and Breadwinners to find out more about the life-changing support they provide, before ending the ride at The Bike Project’s Deptford workshop.

Supported by Choose Love and working closely with The Bike Project, these organisations help refugees and people seeking asylum access bikes and cycling support. We’ll be sharing our conversations with them at the end of June, so keep an eye out.

If you’d like to support Inua’s ride, visit his fundraising page. ❤️

Hearing Neda speak on stage about her journey with The Bike Project was a powerful reminder of why this work matters 🎤 Thanks to our amazing supporters, Neda and her three children each got their own refurbished bike, and learned to cycle together. 💜

“For me, cycling is not just a practical skill- it means strength, hope, and the feeling that I can start new things even after a difficult journey.”

We have until Sunday to raise another £1,436, which could help us give bikes to 12 more refugees like Neda this May and June! Thank you so much to everyone who's already helped.

With over 200 refugees on our waiting list, every pound you give will help. The funds will help our expert mechanics to prepare more refurbished bikes and make sure that more refugees can pick up their new rides in London and Birmingham at the end of this month. 🚲

It’s not too late to help more people like Neda and her children start their new chapter in the UK through access to a bike, safety equipment and cycling training opportunities with The Bike Project. 🙌

Recent events in the UK have left many of us thinking about the future — especially for refugees and people seeking asylum.

In uncertain times, it can feel hard to know what difference any one of us can make.

But simple acts matter.

Right now, we’re raising funds to support refugees on our waiting list. Many are feeling more isolated than ever.

By supporting our appeal and helping us get bikes to refugees you will be giving people hope and a message of welcome.

Now more than ever, kindness and compassion are key.

We will continue to support those seeking sanctuary here - giving them freedom and independence as they rebuild their lives.
