Saturday sipping 🍷

This weekend we're toasting the unexpected warm September weather with a delicious glass of Verdejo from the North of Spain and one of our brilliant bookseller Hannah's favourite reads of recent times, The Breaks by Julietta Singh.

Perfect for fans of Maggie Nelson and James Baldwin, The Breaks is an upliftiing genre-bending memoir that celebrates the mulitplicity of our identities through the lens of q***r motherhood - and challenges us to stay hopeful for the future. Told through a letter to her six-year old daugher, Singh explores what it means to be a q***r Brown parent in our era of climate catasphore and delivers a beautifully tender meditation on racism, colonialism and how we can build a sustainable future together.

We love both the cover and the bottle of this book (which even contains some Edgar Allan Poe on the back - but you'll have to buy a bottle to discover which poem!).

There is some hope that high streets will undergo a renaissance, with surveys suggesting the pandemic has increased appreciation for independent businesses

WHAT A YEAR it has been.

It's been tough, but the sun is on the horizon. 💫💫💫

2020 may have been the year of a global pandemic, but it has taught us many things, including the power of books to inspire hope amd grant solace.

It was also the year that BookBar was born, and we are so grateful to every single one of you for buying books, ordering our Shelf Medicate Prescriptions, signing up for a book subscription or consultation, for asking us for recommendations, and for every single like, comment, share, bookmark, and word of encouragement along the way. THANK YOU ❤❤❤

Best of all, there's hope for the year to come and we have so much to look forward to, including welcoming you all to our bookshop, event space and wine bar, which will be opening in London as soon as it's safe to do so. Best of all, we can't wait to keep sharing our love of books with you, and finding you your perfect read.

Our First Library service is a gorgeous gift for any newborn, birthday or Christmas gift, where we'll put together a selection of stories for now, and some to grow into, especially for them. You may have noticed that we've had a makeover fit for Eliza Doolittle, and don't we look FABULOUS?! 💃💃💃

We've been working with the phenomenal to create a new look and absolutely love what she's done. And, like any new look, we're creating somewhere exciting to show it off.

When we launched at the end of June, we had big ambitions for what BookBar could become. We wanted to remove the stress and intimidation from choosing what to read. We wanted to make the whole reading experience fun, from the moment you decide you'd like a new book, to the conversations you have with friends once you're finished it.

We've loved connecting with every single reader over the last few months, matching you with your favourite new books. But we know there is more we can do in our ambition to make books social.

𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽.

BookBar won't be like any other bookshop. It'll be an events and social space, where you can relax with a glass of wine 🍷, a cup of coffee☕ and a good book 📚, a few friends 🛋 or a even date 💏.

You'll be able to book our events space to host your own book club, or join one of our tailor-made book clubs. Once government regulations allow, we'll be hosting a regular programme of events 🎭, from author talks and signings 🖋, to wine tastings 🥂, exhibitions 🎨 creative workshops 👨‍🎨 and of course our Shelf Medicate Consultation service 📚.
