What if architecture could challenge the way the world works?
Josh Dawson () is an LA-based architect, filmmaker, and researcher exploring how speculative design can reimagine the systems shaping our world. His work spans world-building, installation, and film — often addressing climate politics, extraction, and the legacy of colonialism.
This week in LA, he’s giving a talk at the Helms Design District:
“World-Building and the Architecture of What-If.”
Dawson will discuss how speculative world-building can critique real-world systems while offering tools to reshape them. Drawing from work in architecture, computational design, and filmmaking, he’ll share a journey through projects like Caustico, Loa’s Promise, Spa Sybarite, and the forthcoming Bradbaori.
From advising policymakers on climate resilience at Arcadis to crafting dystopian futures for Netflix, his practice shows how data, design, and storytelling can converge to imagine—and inform—alternative futures.
At SoShiro, we understand architecture as an art form that transcends functionality to create meaningful cultural narratives and emotional experiences. Through storytelling and imagination, architecture becomes a powerful medium to inspire, challenge, and connect communities.
