“Roda di Tina”
The show opens with the song Cacheu da Silva by Seco Coté which calls on the city to wake up and show that it is not asleep, that it has not forgotten its loved ones. Cacheu was the first point of Western contact in West Africa and one of the biggest transatlantic ports during slavery. It is symbolic to rescue this sound in which Tina’s heart beats to begin our journey.
Through this evocation, the soundtrack involves speech, in which Karyna Gomes, one of the great figures of contemporary Bissau Guinean music, tells us about some meanings and conceptions of mandjuandadi; involves transcendence through our spiritual essence; involves the community through the use of sonorities and background sounds that express everything that will not be transmitted through words and involves hope, a moment in which the body is the main transmitter of everything to the sound of Sindin Vela. This closing to the sound of Sindin Vela by Bidinte, is a cry of suffering and a cry of hope for a light that will illuminate our path.
The music in this show is responsible for the state of balance and fullness. The rhythm is imposed on the corporeality of the models, however the movement accompanies the sound dynamics as they are shaped by the rhythm of the music.
Without Karyna, this show will not be the same. I am really grateful for our conversation that allows me to understand my culture deeper, such as about the mandjuandadi. Our recorded conversations, along with her beautiful voice complimented the music and the direction of the show. It really highlights the beauty of Bissau Guinean music. And because of that, I thank you.
I would also like to thank Remna for his suggestions and help for the soundtrack for this show. His knowledge on Bissau Guinean archival music and effortless skills emphasises the essence and atmosphere that I want to bring out.
