🎨🎨 Exhibition interpretation for the Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition ‘Small Wonders: Reimagining British Art’, starting at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead, then touring the country.

How to make a travelling exhibition caption as easy as possible to install in multiple venues? Robust engraved Traffolyte labels with a single hole right in the middle, perhaps slightly influenced by Dieter Roth’s list of works insert for his exhibition catalogue Boeken at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1975, that has a single staple in the middle of the unfolded sheet (see last image). These captions and panels became a typesetting challenge with the text having to jump over the screw hole 🕳️

⚫️ To accompany the Anish Kapoor show that opened last night at the Hayward Gallery, we have designed two publications.📕📗 ‘Way Out Way In’ is a flexible hardback book with 265 colour photographs taken by Anish over the past five decades. The images relate closely to his work: structures, forms, textures and spatial compositions. They show the work without actually showing the work.

Some of the photographs remind me of my time in India in the late 1990s, when I was taking similar pictures of boulders, walls, holes and animals – sights, smells and aesthetics that all seemed so exotic at the time.

The book has been beautifully put together by Alex Conway here at the studio with Clare Chapman from Anish Kapoor Studio and Mary Richards from Hayward Publishing. Well done all on a great job. 👏

This may seem like any old cooking wooden spatula, but it’s my most treasured possession. And perhaps my earliest piece of ‘typography’, made when I was 9 or 10, in woodwork class, with the punched words ‘TO MUM LOVE FRASER’ barely legible after so many years of use. Today marks 40 years of her passing so using this to cook with feels super special ❤️

The consistent 8.7cm stripe acts as a unifying visual element that runs through each iteration of printed matter, while the surrounding pages and contexts reveal the evolution of graphic design, typography and print production over the last fifty years.

Coincidentally I had in my bag today the sweatshirt we made that was an illegible copy of Experimental Jetset’s now iconic “John & Paul & Ringo & George.’ T-shirt
