Vince Staples - Cry Baby

The gifted US rapper Vice Staples returns with the excellent ‘Cry Baby’. Is the title an homage to the great John Waters film? Either way, Staples’ off-kilter storytelling and acute cultural insights share a lot with the cult director, while of course being a fair bit more understated. Offering a broader lens without losing the focus and control that has shaped his music, ‘Cry Baby’ once again positions Staples as a defining voice in modern hip-hop. (Released: 05/06/26)

Kind of like American Football crossed with Minutemen, with a sprinkling of Flying Nun goodness, the excellent ‘The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time For Walkies)’ (what a title), originally released last year, advances the blueprint of the New Zealand outfit’s highly melodic post-punk, which made their 2023 debut such a thrill.
