The Spiller Hot Head Damsel, a variant of the gold bead head Spiller Damsel. As the original, this hot head version is quite small in scale very similar to an actual damsel nymph. Something that sets this apart from the rest is the custom damsel dubbing blend used, it is comprised of multiple colours that give a rich and vibrant olive. Almost every Stillwater angler has a version of this fly in their box, but it was Rob Spiller who originally invented it. Tinheads, what’s all the fuss about ?
Well the original Tinhead hooks and flies were developed by Jeanette Taylor (Genie’s Flies) and Bob Church, they were (are) flat out deadly. When Bob Church ceased trading, they effectively were no longer available, until now. has put these hooks and flies back into manufacture. The weight of our Tinhead hooks and flies, exactly matches the old Genie’s Tinhead hooks. For all the geeks out there they weight around 0.26g, this sits them@pretty much in the middle weight wise between a 3.2mm and 3.8mm standard Tungsten bead. Rob Spiller was the originator of so many classic small stillwater fly patterns. Just to name a few, Rob developed the Goldhead Damsel, the Growler and of course also the Nomad that we are showing here. The Nomad’s unique bead placement gives a subtle horizontal shimmer effect on the pause. On waters that see lots of flies with that exaggerated up and down movement from the standard bead placement of regular bead head flies, the Nomad is highly effective. Often tied completely incorrectly, the Nomad should have a long slim tail, the body needs to be tied with 4-6mm pearl cactus chenille and the bead placement should be around 1/3 of a hook shank back from the eye.
