β€œLet us strive, every year we live β€” to become more deeply acquainted with Scripture. Let us study it, search into it, dig into it, meditate on it β€” until it dwells in us richly. (Colossians 3:16.)

In particular, let us labor to make ourselves familiar with those parts of the Bible which, like the book of Psalms, describe the experience of the saints of old. We shall find it most helpful to us in all our approaches to God. It will supply us with the best and most suitable language both for the expression of our needs and thanksgivings.

Such knowledge of the Bible can doubtless never be attained without regular, daily study. But the time spent on such study is never misspent. It will bear fruit after many days.”

610 years ago today, the Bohemian church reformer Jan Hus was martyred in Constance, Germany.

His accusers made it clear at his trial that Hus would not only die, but that they planned for him to die without hope. "We take from you the cup of redemption," the prosecutors solemnly intoned before sentencing him. But Hus replied, "I trust in the Lord God almighty ... that He will not take away from me the cup of His redemption, but I firmly hope to drink from it today in His kingdom." πŸ™Œ

Jan Hus, sometimes written John Huss, was a late 14th/early 15th century Bohemian pastor and reformer. Hus Rose to prominence in the early 15th century after he was ordained in the year 1400. He served as a preacher at Bethlehem Chapel and as the Rector and Dean of Charles University, both in Prague. Influenced by the work of John Wycliffe, Hus came under fire for his criticism of the Roman Catholic Church; specifically his outspoken positions regarding the sale of indulgences, the conduct of the church's clergy, and the authority of the Bishop of Rome.

After refusing to recant his positions Hus was arrested, tried, and condemned for heresy against the Roman Catholic Church by the Council of Constance in 1415. He was ultimately martyred, being burned at the stake in Konstanz, Germany on July 6th, 1415.

Hus is widely recognized, along with John Wycliffe, as one of the proto-reformers who laid the groundwork leading to the Protestant Reformation a century later.
