We are nearly there…

SHARED GROUND is a collaborative project between woodturner and myself.

I have burned and transformed into ash the wood shavings from lan’s turning practice, which I have then used to make ceramic glazes.

We have tested 10 different wood essences: Walnut, Ash, Beech, Chestnut, London Plane, Oak, Sapele, Cherry, Iroko and Canary wood.

We will be showing our results for the first time at the Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey.

Each ceramic piece will be paired with a turned wooden form made from the same species of wood, creating a dialogue between material in its original state and its transformed counterpart.

Next Thursday I’ll be setting up my stand at the Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey. It’s always a pleasure to return to Devon for this three-day weekend of craft, food, and familiar faces.

This year feels a little special as I’ve partnered with to present a new body of work, the result of our collaboration. It will be the first time we show it together, so there is a quiet sense of anticipation in not yet knowing how it will be received.

I’m learning to make space for uncertainty, and trust what we’ve made.

This weekend, I’ll be taking part for the first time in Ceramics South East, at the Clay studio, in Heron’s Ghyll.

The venue sounds like an idyllic place in the middle of the countryside. We are over 40 potters and ceramic artists and we will be split between the barn, the courtyard and the studio. Friday will be a nocturne, 5pm til 9pm, with food and drinks available, and on Saturday, we’ll be open all day.

I hope you can come and say hi if you’re around, available and fancy looking at some beautiful pots. Entry is free :)

I often say that ash glazes have a mind of their own. Another cool fact about them, they like to be accompanied. Here, in the form of a Tenmoku glaze underneath.

Some of those are frankly a bit boring on their own, but give them a buddy and they shine !!

This small teabowl has found a new home last weekend. Handbuilt from a red Keuper clay, it’s been brushed with oxide and ash-glazed. Most of my drinking vessels are wheel-thrown so it was very interesting to see the public’s reaction to it…

Pottery can be a solitary practice. You don’t get much feedback on what you make. So I am very grateful to all the organisers of ceramics or craft shows, because they allow us to meet our people, face to face, exchange, engage and receive feedback in a way that is deeper I found than on social media. One cannot replace the other in my opinion, but both are complementary…
