This is the first instalment of our “history of” series where we take a look into the history of silver mugs and tankards!

Silver mugs and tankards have been in production in England since the 16th century, with the earliest known example hallmarked in 1556.

But, what's the difference between a tankard and a mug?

A tankard is modelled on a beer mug and features a hinged lid. A mug is a cylindrical drinking cup with a handle but no lid. A tankard is a lidded drinking vessel. Although it seems strange now to drink out of a lidded vessel this was the norm until the second half of the 18th century. Perhaps this was because ceilings were not plastered underneath; so without a lid, you stood the risk of having dirt, straw and spiders dropping into your ale.

Has their usage changed throughout history?

The first "pots" (aka mugs) appeared in English taverns around 1650 and these early examples were tall with heavy banding, but around 1690-1700 mugs with plain bodies appeared.

Small mugs were made specifically for children with some 18th-century boarding schools listing a mug as a mandatory item that a boy should take to school. Most early examples of children's mugs are of a plain baluster shape, designed for their sturdiness and practicality, and in the 1760s a barrel-shaped design appeared, often simply decorated with engraved hoops.

Today, silver mugs and tankards are extremely popular among collectors for their historical inscriptions and the pleasure of drinking from them.

Langfords Silver is proud to stock a wide range of silverware from some of the greatest silversmiths, including Paul Storr!

Who is Paul Storr?

Paul Storr was England's most celebrated silversmith during the first half of the nineteenth century and his legacy lives on today. His pieces historically and currently adorn royal palaces and the finest stately homes throughout Europe and the world. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neoclassical style developed in the Regency period. He quickly became the most prominent silversmith of the nineteenth century, producing much of the silver purchased by King George III and King George IV.

Storr entered his first mark in the first part of 1792, which reflects his short-lived partnership with William Frisbee. Soon after, he began to use his PS mark, which he maintained throughout his career with only minor changes. His first major work was a gold font commissioned by the Duke of Portland in 1797 and in 1799 he created the "Battle of the Nile Cup" for presentation to Lord Nelson.

Items from Storr's workshops may be seen at Windsor Castle and during the summer opening season at Buckingham Palace. There are significant holdings of items in the National Silver Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum as well as in the Wellington Collection at Apsley House.

Throughout time, the traditions around weddings and marriage have grown and changed – particularly the customs of gift giving.

During the Renaissance period, ornate marriage chests were gifted so that the bride could take any items she wished into her groom’s new household. This led to the development of hope chests, which were used by single ladies to collect things they may need in their future married life.

Today, choosing silverware is the perfect gift for the happy couple since unique, personal pieces can be treasured and used during special celebrations!
