Last week it was disability and this week I'm going to talk about a new gay charity.
When I had Krystals, my gay cabaret bar in Stoke Newington, we supported and did events for The Food Chain. And that was the first time I had ever actually raised money for charity.
When I returned from Thailand last summer and started upon my new 'old' life in London I started meeting gay men from all around the world. A lot of Asian men who had had a lot of problems due to being gay.
I met a young gay couple who cannot return to their home country because both their families have threatened to kill them.
Then recently whilst collecting new members for this group I came across a couple of gay refugees in Africa. I have since got in touch with the gay supervisor who looks after the 70 lgbtq+ community in an 80,000 person refugee camp in Northern Kenya. He says that their group are the lowest priority for absolutely everything including food, medication and housing (such as it is). He's been there 2 years.
This has prompted me to look into the situation globally and I have to say it's not good. We Western gay's have it bloody easy and I'm going to try my best to help these people.
I'm setting up a charity called Safe Haven Alliance and anyone who wants to help can give me a DM or email for now. Here is the mission statement:-
βTo relieve the suffering and advance the human rights of LGBTQ+ refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, particularly those facing persecution due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, by providing support, advocacy, access to essential services, and programmes which promote wellbeing, safety and inclusion in the UK and Internationally.β
The charity pictured was taken 2 days ago. It's based in Canada.
