📚 Bookfeast favourites
These are a few titles we particularly enjoyed and always recommend:
The Bell Jar
A coming-of-age story for the young female protagonist. It somehow reminded me of Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye.
The Vegetarian
Unsettling, unpredictable characters - the Asian diaspora seems to have mastered this as an art form.
Perfume
A dark and, at times, humorous tract, almost a Pied Piper affair.
East of Eden
The John Bevy classic was one of my favourites last year. A bevy of characters, both dark and light, brought together beautifully by a master of his craft.
Pachinko
A meandering saga through the decades of mid- to late-century Japan, starring Korean immigrants. It offers a historical view of the tensions between these nations, as well as an exploration of class, love and loss. This novel has everything.
James
Jimmy is not your average slave; he is much more than that. Mr Everett pinpoints and lampoons, with great wit and dexterity, the absurdities and stupidity of the “lesser man” theory.
Fup
Last but not least, one of my all-time favourites. I try to reread this every year, and it never fails to make me smile, laugh and marvel at the human condition. A must-read.
