Are you disabled or living with someone who is, but still paying full Council Tax?

You could be missing out on substantial local deductions.

The UK system does not rely on just one single scheme - there are multiple support avenues to explore, including disabled band reductions, severe mental impairment exemptions, and low income support.

Assuming you do not qualify simply because your local council hasn't mentioned it is one of the most common ways disabled households overpay on their bills.

Read the full guide on our website under Purpl Life.

While our online advice articles and resource tools are always 100% free for anyone to use, our paid membership options start at £1 a month.

Join today and get access to hundreds of discounts and our quarterly grant fund for equipment and therapy to help offset the extra costs that come when you live with a disability. Disability costs on average an extra £1,095 per month in the UK.

We can't change how complicated local authority billing criteria can be, but we can help you find exemptions and make your everyday shopping budget go further.

Have you applied for a Council Tax reduction or band lower drop before? Was your local authority straightforward to deal with?

Access to Work cap freeze: What disabled workers need to know

The Access to Work cap has officially frozen at £69,260 for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 financial years. While the total cap has not gone down, rising support fees mean this fixed amount may cover fewer hours of critical assistance over time.

This freeze heavily impacts deaf workers relying on BSL interpreters, those employing secondary support staff, and disabled employees managing consistent hybrid or travel schedules. Despite the cap restrictions, the funding remains fully open to help you start, stay in, or transition into work roles.

To stay protected, make sure to apply as early as possible, meticulously track your support costs, and ask for an official administrative review if your personal occupational needs change.

While we cannot directly influence government policy decisions, Purpl is built to take the regular financial strain off your everyday essentials.

Endometriosis is so often dismissed as “bad periods”, but for many people it affects work, sleep, mobility, mental health, relationships and everyday life.

In the UK, endometriosis can be considered a disability if it has a substantial and long-term impact on daily activities.

That means it is not just about having the diagnosis. It is about how symptoms affect you day to day, from severe pelvic pain and fatigue to bowel symptoms, heavy bleeding, brain fog, mobility difficulties and recovery time after flare-ups.

You may also be able to ask for workplace adjustments or look into support such as PIP, depending on how endometriosis affects your daily living or mobility.

We’ve put together a clear guide explaining when endometriosis may count as a disability, what support may be available, and what evidence can help if you are applying for benefits or asking for adjustments.

Have you ever felt like your endometriosis symptoms were misunderstood or dismissed?

The Access to Work cap has been frozen at £69,260 for 2025/26 and 2026/27.

That might sound like “no change”, but for disabled workers with high support needs, it can mean something very real: fewer interpreter hours, fewer support worker hours, or harder choices across the year if costs keep rising.

Access to Work is still available, and it remains a vital scheme for disabled people who need support to start, stay in or move into work. But if you rely on regular support, now is the time to check your award, track your costs and plan ahead.

We’ve broken down what has changed, who may be most affected and what you can do next.

I’ve just spent two weeks in Sydney as a wheelchair user and honestly, it’s one of the most accessible cities I’ve ever visited.

From step-free ferries and accessible public transport to companion tickets, gluten free dining and wheelchair-friendly attractions, Sydney exceeded my expectations.

The biggest surprise?

Not once during the whole trip did we need to lift my wheelchair over a kerb.

Travelling with a disability still took its toll on my body, but spending time with family and exploring Australia made every ache and pain worth it.

Read my honest review of Sydney's accessibility here.
