To coincide with today’s Trooping the Colour, we’re highlighting this limited-edition copy of Watercolours by King Charles III. This is number 77 of just 100 copies signed by the King, published to mark his 50th birthday, with proceeds benefiting the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation.

Featuring a personal introduction by the King reflecting on his passion for watercolour painting alongside a preface by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, this book is a remarkable blend of royal history and artistry.

The resulting collection contains over 1,500 images of Native American culture – an impressive feat of both artistry and historical archiving.

Our sister shop, William Reese Company, recently acquired a full subscriber’s set of this work. One of their specialists, Ella, answered a few of our questions about its significance.

Sylvia Plath spent only 26 days in New York, yet the city left a lasting impact. She came to Manhattan in 1953 as part of Mademoiselle magazine’s highly competitive Guest Editor program, an experience she recalled in The Bell Jar.

The first edition bears the pseudonym Victoria Lucas because of Plath’s fears that the similarities to her life would hurt her friends and family, and especially her mother. Only 2,000 copies were printed under the pseudonym; all subsequent editions were credited to Plath. 11 days after The Bell Jar’s publication, Plath took her own life, making this the only novel she ever published.

The deadline is approaching to enter The Antiquarian Booksellers' Association Book Collecting prize...

Previous co-winner Joseph, from our travel department, shares his thoughts about the prize:

“Submitting to the ABA National Book Collecting Prize was the first time I began to think about my collecting interests as an activity with a coherent theme and focus. It also prompted me to think more about the details of bibliography and condition in what I own, which set me up well for working in the rare book trade.”

🗓️ Deadline: Tuesday 30 June

The Great Exhibition Road Festival is taking place this weekend in South Kensington, a few minutes away from our Fulham Road shop. Celebrating science and the arts, the festival marks 175 years since the Great Exhibition of 1851, the first World Fair, attended by over six million visitors.

This magnificent folio reveals the elaborate views that welcomed the masses to Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition of Products of Industry of All Nations, held in Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace.

Flicking through the pages of this book reveals illustrations that show in detail the layout of products, natural or man-made, of each country or region that participated. Each is accompanied by a description giving geographical, historical, and social context to the goods.
