Timberkits

Timberkits Making a Timberkit is to step into the whole world of Automata. Wonderful moving models and scenes. Mechanical model kits made of wood! 😀

It is an art form in which you can appreciate the magic of mechanical action and a fascinating education for children and adults of all ages.

My good friend is currently in the Netherlands playing with automata and having a whale of a time (where dd that saying come from and has anyone made an automata about it?). The bunch of enthusiasts around him are wanting to create a group for automatists in their country that can share/inspire/provoke/entertain/discuss/brain-storm etc all things Automata. I am certain I have some Dutch friends on my Facebook and Instagram pages - please could you raise your hands, say hi and introduce yourselves to Ellen who is up for co-ordinating things on [email protected] if you fancy being part of it? And your first shared subject could be all about how whales help you have fun....... .just putting that out there.......... don't know how it translates..... .. don't think there are many whales around the Netherlands......map is just here to catch the eye of anyone recognising it as home :) 🐋🐳

Now I get it!
The wind and rain is raging outside, the wood is crackling in the Rayburn, got a glass of wine, got some Timberkits, having a lot of fun just building a few as gifts now I don't actually have to run a business with them anymore. Meals go uncooked, laundry unattended to, pets have not been fed, I am not having conversations with anyone in the house, time is passing quietly - it is REALLY nice!!!!! Is this what our customers have been enjoying all these years? It really has not been fair!!!! I have finally realised the worth of this activity.......I do apologise though for all the domestic neglect they have caused.....

Josh wants to make a table out of Alder from our field. He wants to work with the irregularities and keep it organic/rustic looking although the wood will be cleaned up a bit more than you can see here in the end. We built a former - the internal frame you see - only to support the legs while we try to arrange them in a vaguely vertical/horizontal way. It is quite a challenge as every surface and length is all wibbly-wobbly so there is no datum to measure anything from. There will be lots of adjustments to make at every turn and use of an eye-chrometer as no other conventional measuring tool quite fits the bill.

As most of you know, Timberkits has now closed. But you don't get rid of me that easily I'm afraid. The workshop is still there and I have just spent a joyous day there messing about with bits of wood with my son Josh. Josh is 26 but suffered some massive brain damage when he was 2 and has spent the rest of his life recovering. He is physically strong and able but has various lasting impairments on all fronts. One of his ambitions has always been to make things (furniture, planters, bird boxes, anything really) to sell and now I have more time, I am going to help make that happen for him. We will have a lot of fun - machines, sawdust, chisels, banter, nonsense and lots of tea and biscuits - what is not to love??!!!

I have a Diggy Doggy model going too. £15.00 plus shipping. DM me if interested.
This came from an original design concept by and relates to my previous post about the Monkey in that the manufacturing technique necessitates a layered construction. Laser cutting made this so much easier but did not turn out to be as economically efficient as you would think because this amount of detailed components takes a fair time to cut so we couldn't churn them out at a particulalry fast rate and we still had to make spacers and cut dowel pegs to include. Also laser cut kits are very difficult to protect as they are so easy to copy and that always made me nervous. Our traditional Timberkits never had an IP issue because no-one in their right minds would try to knock off a few for a quick buck because they are so damn difficult to produce.
However, I still love this design, it is so...well...so doggy!

I have one little Monkey model for sale.
£15.00 plus shipping. DM me if interested.
Back in the day before laser cutters were a thing, Mum and Dad designed a series of die cut kits in an attempt to try an easier to manufacture range. They did a monkey, a lion and an elephant all in this layered type construction. This was a dramatic deviation from the usual very 3D Timberkit style where most components were made using traditional machines and skilled craftsmen.
