🥾 Looking for quieter trails away from the crowds?

Some of the UK’s most rewarding hiking experiences aren’t necessarily the famous summits filling your social feed. Across Scotland, England and Wales you’ll find spectacular routes offering remote landscapes, wildlife, dramatic scenery and a little more solitude.

Our five lesser-known picks:

🏔️ Fannich Hills – Scottish Highlands
Remote Highland terrain with fantastic mountain scenery and a real sense of wilderness.

🥾 Cheviot Hills – Northumberland
Rolling hills, exposed ridges and miles of wild countryside along the England–Scotland border.

🌿 Arnside & Silverdale – Lake District area
A completely different experience combining limestone landscapes, woodland and beautiful coastal scenery.

⛰️ Black Mountains – Bannau Brycheiniog, Wales
Big ridgelines, challenging terrain and outstanding views without the crowds found on some of Wales’ better-known mountains.

🌊 Moray Coast Trail – Scotland
Clifftops, beaches, fishing villages and wildlife make this a fantastic alternative to a traditional mountain hike.

⚠️ Quieter doesn’t mean easier. Remote routes can require stronger navigation skills and may have limited phone signal, water sources and nearby facilities.

Before setting out, check the latest weather and route conditions, carry proper navigation equipment, tell someone your plans and take enough food, water and emergency equipment for the conditions.

Sometimes the best adventures are found beyond the busiest trails. 🌍

🏔️ Pakistan – Home to some of the world’s greatest trekking adventures

From the mighty Karakoram to the western Himalayas, Pakistan offers some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes on Earth. Towering 8,000-metre peaks, vast glaciers, remote valleys and welcoming mountain communities make it a true paradise for experienced trekkers.

Some of our top picks include:

🥾 K2 Base Camp Trek – A world-famous expedition to the foot of the second-highest mountain on Earth.

🏔️ Nanga Parbat Base Camp Trek – A challenging route to one of the world’s most iconic peaks, known as the “King of the Mountains.”

🌲 Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat Viewpoint – One of the most beautiful and accessible mountain walks in Pakistan.

🏞️ Hushe Valley Trek – A quieter route with stunning scenery and access to some of the Karakoram’s most dramatic peaks.

⛰️ Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek – A fantastic trek through the Nagar Valley to one of Pakistan’s most recognisable mountains.

🧊 Biafo–Hispar Glacier Trek – One of the longest glacier treks outside the polar regions, recommended only for experienced trekkers with appropriate support.

Before visiting Pakistan’s mountains:

✅ Trek during the appropriate season (typically late spring to early autumn).
🧭 Use experienced local guides for remote routes.
🏔️ Allow time to acclimatise to high altitude.
🎒 Carry the correct equipment and prepare for rapidly changing mountain weather.
🌿 Respect local customs, communities and always follow Leave No Trace principles.

Pakistan’s mountains offer some of the most rewarding trekking experiences anywhere in the world—but they demand preparation, respect and good judgement.

🔥 Which camping stove is right for your adventure? 🔥

Choosing the right stove isn’t just about boiling water—it’s about matching your equipment to the type of adventure you’re planning.

Whether you’re a beginner heading out for a weekend hike or an experienced mountaineer tackling remote terrain, the right stove can improve efficiency, reduce pack weight and help you stay safe in the outdoors.

Here’s a quick guide:

🥾 Canister Stove – Lightweight, reliable and ideal for most hikers and weekend campers.

🍳 Integrated Stove System – Fast, fuel-efficient and perfect for solo hikers or anyone who mainly boils water for dehydrated meals.

🏔️ Liquid Fuel Stove – The best choice for winter, high-altitude expeditions and long trips where reliability in cold weather is essential.

🎒 Alcohol Stove – A favourite with ultralight hikers who prioritise minimal pack weight over cooking speed.

🌲 Wood-Burning Stove – Great for longer off-grid adventures where local regulations allow and suitable fuel is readily available.

Before you light any stove:

✅ Cook on a stable, level surface.
🔥 Keep fuel away from open flames.
💨 Ensure good ventilation—never cook inside a tent.
🌿 Follow Leave No Trace principles and local fire restrictions.
🧯 Always extinguish your stove completely before packing it away.

The best stove is the one that’s suited to your adventure—not necessarily the most expensive one.

🚁 Mountain Rescue: the non-negotiables that save lives 🚁

Every year, Mountain Rescue teams respond to hundreds of preventable callouts across the UK. Many incidents don’t happen because people lack determination—they happen because they underestimate the mountains or head out unprepared.

The good news? Many emergencies can be avoided by following a few simple principles:

🗺️ Plan your route before you leave.
🌦️ Check the mountain weather forecast—not just the local forecast.
🥾 Wear suitable clothing and footwear for the conditions.
🎒 Carry the essentials, including navigation equipment, a headtorch, first aid kit and emergency shelter.
📱 Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return.
⛰️ Know your limits and don’t be afraid to turn back if conditions change.

If you ever need help in the mountains:

📞 Call 999 or 112 and ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue.
📍 Give your exact location—using a grid reference or what3words if available—and stay where you are if it’s safe to do so.

Mountain Rescue teams are made up of highly trained volunteers who give their time to help others. The best way to support them is by preparing properly and making good decisions before and during your adventure.

Be prepared. Stay safe. Respect the mountains.

⛰️ Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain🏔️

Standing at 978 metres (3,209 ft), Scafell Pike is one of the UK’s most iconic summits and a must-do for anyone who loves hiking and mountaineering.

But choosing the right route is just as important as reaching the summit.

🥾 Brown Tongue – The easiest and most popular route from Wasdale Head, ideal for those tackling Scafell Pike for the first time.

🏔️ Corridor Route – A more adventurous and incredibly scenic option, offering one of the finest mountain walks in the Lake District.

💪 Eskdale via Esk Hause – A longer, quieter and more demanding route, best suited to experienced hill walkers with good navigation skills.

Before setting off, always remember:

✅ Check the mountain weather forecast.
🧭 Carry a map, compass or GPS—and know how to use them.
🎒 Pack waterproofs, warm layers, food, water, a first aid kit and an emergency shelter.
📱 Tell someone your planned route and expected return time.
📞 In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue.

The summit will always be there. Make good decisions, respect the mountain and ensure you return home safely.

⛰️ When you’re in the mountains, the right kit can save a life 🏔️

Whether you’re climbing your first peak or tackling a challenging mountain route, carrying the right emergency equipment is just as important as having the right boots.

🧥 Waterproof and insulating layers
🛌 Emergency bivvy bag or survival shelter
📢 Whistle for attracting attention
🔧 Multi-tool or knife

🔥 England’s heatwave is increasing the risk of wildfires 🔥

With prolonged hot, dry weather affecting much of the UK, our forests, moorland, national parks and open countryside are becoming increasingly vulnerable to fast-spreading fires.

Recent incidents, including fires in the Yorkshire Dales and other parts of the country, are a reminder that it only takes one spark to cause devastating damage to wildlife, habitats and the people working to protect them.

If you’re enjoying the outdoors this summer, please do your part:

🚫 Never light BBQs or campfires on open moorland or in forests.

🚭 Never discard ci******es or matches.

🗑️ Take all litter home, especially glass bottles, which can contribute to fire risk.

📞 Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.

🌿 Stick to local guidance and help protect our countryside for future generations.

The outdoors belongs to all of us. Let’s enjoy it responsibly and leave every place better than we found it.
