The SYM NH-T 125 is a surprisingly capable little adventure-style 125. It has a full-size feel, comfortable upright riding position and distinctive styling, making it a good choice for commuting, A-road riding and light trail use.

With a 124cc single-cylinder producing around 10–11bhp, it isn’t the quickest 125, but it’s economical and perfectly adequate for everyday riding. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, decent suspension and standard luggage rack give it genuine versatility.

The Mash X-Ride 650 Classic is a really interesting bike if you like the old-school 1980s trail-bike look but want something modern enough to use every day.

What I like….

* 644cc air/oil-cooled single-cylinder
* Around 40 bhp and 32 lb-ft of torque
* Very distinctive XT500-style retro looks
* Simple, characterful engine
* ABS, fuel injection and LED lighting give it some modern practicality
* Spoked wheels and high-level exhaust look fantastic
* Reasonably light for a 650 at around 180kg ready to ride
* Comfortable enough for shorter rides
* A2-compatible in the appropriate restricted version/specification.

How does it ride?

The big single is the star of the show. It isn’t fast, but it has plenty of character and gives you that old-fashioned thumpy single-cylinder feel.

It’ll comfortably cruise at normal UK road speeds and can reach around 80–90mph, but it’s much happier being ridden at a relaxed pace than being pushed hard.

The chassis is actually better than you might expect. The suspension gives a decent ride and the bike is reasonably agile.

Fantastic value for money, I’m sure you agree 🤙

What I like….

< A little stunner >

The 2019 Yamaha MT-03 is a fantastic lightweight naked bike that offers an excellent balance of performance, practicality and fun. Its smooth 321cc parallel-twin engine produces around 42bhp, giving it plenty of performance for A2 riders while still being economical and easy to manage.

With a 168kg wet weight and 780mm seat height, the MT-03 is incredibly nimble and confidence-inspiring, making it equally at home around town or being thrown through twisty country roads. The six-speed gearbox is slick, the clutch is light and the engine loves to rev.

The upright riding position, ABS brakes and excellent Yamaha reliability make it a particularly appealing everyday bike, while the aggressive MT styling gives it plenty of road presence despite its relatively small capacity.

Overall, the 2019 MT-03 is a brilliant A2-friendly naked bike – lightweight, economical, reliable and genuinely fun to ride. A great step up from a 125 and a bike that can be enjoyed long after you’ve moved on from your A2 licence.
