People often ask me what my favourite flower is.

The truth is… it changes almost every week! As the seasons change so does my mind. I’m a bit fickle like that 😂 I have to say when it’s peony season they are definitely my favourite. But then the sweet peas happen along and I’ll fall in love with the scent of them. Then next it will be the roses that catch my eye or the simplicity of a bunch of daisies. After that comes the dahlias. And who can resist the cafe au laits? What’s a girl to do?
I think that’s one of the joys of working with flowers. Just when you think you’ve chosen a favourite, another one catches your eye. So this Friday, I’m curious…
If you could only have one flower in a vase at home this weekend, what would you choose?

People often apologise when they come into the shop. “ sorry I can’t breathe” (they’re halfway up the hill😂)

“ sorry, I just had to come in I could smell your shop all the way up the hill”
( in a good way I hope😂)

“Sorry, I’m not very good at choosing flowers.”

“Sorry, I don’t know anything about flowers.”

“Sorry, I don’t even know where to start.”

Please don’t worry.

You don’t need to know the names of the flowers. You don’t need to know what’s in season. You don’t need to have a Pinterest board or the perfect idea. That’s our job. Your job is simply to tell us about the person you’re buying them for.Because once we know who they’re for, choosing the flowers becomes the easy part.

People often see the finished bouquet, the beautifully dressed church or the wedding reception ready for guests.
What they don’t always see are the little moments beforehand. The careful tying of every ribbon. The final check that every stem is sitting just where it should. The stepping back, looking again and making one last tiny adjustment. Those little details might go unnoticed by most people, but they matter to us. Not because we’re striving for perfection, but because we know these flowers will become part of someone’s memories. They’ll be in the photographs that are looked at for years to come and in the moments a couple will never forget. It’s a lovely reminder that the things people remember are often built from lots of small acts of care. That’s one of the parts of floristry I love the most.

One of the lovely things about flowers is that they never seem to be in a hurry.
Each one opens in its own time.
No amount of wishing will make a bud bloom before it’s ready, and as a florist that can be incredibly frustrating, yet when the time is right, it unfolds exactly as it was created to.
I sometimes think we’re a little like that.
We can become impatient, wondering why life isn’t moving as quickly as we’d hoped, especially if we’re waiting for a big event to happen. Yet perhaps growth is happening in ways we can’t yet see.
So today, be kind to yourself. Trust the season you’re in, keep looking for the beauty around you and remember that some of life’s loveliest things take time.

A little Saturday thought…

Owning a flower shop has taught me that people don’t always come in because they need flowers. Sometimes they come in because they need a few minutes away from a busy day. A quiet browse, a friendly chat, a little inspiration or simply a moment of beauty. Sometimes it’s an opportunity to unburden themselves of today’s worries. Other times, it’s to share exciting news or celebrate a special milestone. Whatever brings them through our door, we love helping them choose flowers or find the perfect gift. But I hope they leave with something more than a bouquet. Perhaps they leave feeling a little lighter than when they came in. Perhaps they’ve caught their breath, paused for a while and allowed the fragrance of fresh flowers to fill their senses.
If we’ve managed to brighten someone’s day, even in the smallest way, then I’d say it’s been a good day.

Friday Flowers

After a busy week of weddings, sympathy flowers, birthdays and everyday bouquets, one thing never changes…I always like to stop to admire the flowers and smell the roses. In fact we used to have a sign outside the shop saying “ catch your breath and stop to smell the roses” after climbing halfway up Steep Hill people needed to. 😂 Even after all these years, there are moments when a rose opens perfectly, or a jar of sweet peas fills the shop with their fragrance or the afternoon light catches a bucket of fresh blooms, and we simply pause. Perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts of working with flowers. They gently remind you not to rush past beauty.

One of the quietest parts of our work…

People often think floristry is all about weddings and celebrations. And we do love those joyful days. But some of the most meaningful conversations happen when someone walks through our door needing flowers for a funeral.
Often they don’t know what they want.
They’re grieving. They’re trying to make decisions they never expected to make. Sometimes they simply need someone to listen before they choose any flowers at all. Those are the days that remind us our job isn’t just arranging flowers. It’s walking alongside people, however briefly, at some of life’s most significant moments. We may only be a small part of their story, but it’s a part we always hope to honour with kindness, care and beautiful flowers. I wonder if there’s someone in your life who has quietly helped you through a difficult time. Sometimes it’s the smallest acts of kindness that stay with us the longest.

…is being invited into one of the happiest days of someone’s life. For a little while, we become part of the excitement, the anticipation and all the tiny details that make a wedding unique. Then, once the flowers are delivered and everything is in place, we quietly step away and let the day become theirs. It’s a privilege we never take for granted. Thank you to every couple who has trusted us to play a small part in such an important chapter of your story.

One of the greatest joys of this job isn’t arranging flowers—it’s being trusted with life’s biggest moments. Weddings, anniversaries, new babies, birthdays, saying thank you, saying goodbye…
Flowers become part of people’s stories, and we never take that privilege for granted. It’s a lovely reminder that while flowers may only last for a while, the memories they become part of can last a lifetime.
