Any other busy working parents been limping towards school going back?

I (Nikki) absolutely love the school holidays. We thrive on the lack of routine, time spent outside and as a family. However, the juggle is real, and exhausting and everyone in this Instagram perfect world, make it look easy (from the outside).

I’m sure other parents will be feeling just as frazzled as us. We made it though, with Fife schools heading back this morning. Next on the list is getting back into a routine and getting meals pinned down again.

I thought I’d highlight our excellent range of COOK ready meals which are a lifesaver in our house. Of course we all love to make things from scratch but sometimes life just doesn’t play ball and that’s when having these meals in the freezer come in so handy. The boys have decided the Lasagne is actually better than mine and I’m just delighted not to phaff around making it anymore!

From mac cheese to curry or beef bourguignon we have a huge selection of meals on one, two and four portions, all cook from frozen. The perfect thing to have in the freezer for days that just don’t go to plan!

We were really sad to hear that Scotland the Bread were to stop milling last month. It’s incredibly special to have local flour, grown and milled in the area. The good news is that we bought lots of their last batch and so have plenty in the shop, until it runs out.

There are also rumours of some people locally taking over where they left off so watch this space.

Our wheat, although not heritage, has just been harvested and will be heading to be milled soon. We’ve got 2 bags of pasta left in the shop and no flour however we should be fully stocked for the year ahead by the end of September!

We’re very much a family business!

Today Claire, Matthew and Scott are trying desperately to get our harvest in and baling up to date before the weather changes after the weekend.

This means auntie Nikki is in the shop with Fergus serving, doing deliveries and an induction for a new member of our team.

Meanwhile granny Fiona is along helping Tara at Woodland Gardens Caravan Site with three grandchildren while Tara does check in’s and turn overs.

It’s never a dull day here, especially during harvest!!

There's something quite special about knowing where your food comes from.

Knowing who grew it.
Knowing who raised it.
Knowing where your money goes.
Knowing that the food on your plate has a connection to the land around you.

We're incredibly proud to be a Scottish family farm, growing, producing and selling as much of our own food as we can.

We think supporting Scottish agriculture, buying seasonal food and keeping family farms farming is pretty chic.

Actually... we think it's more than kinda chic.

Bluetongue - not our usual cheery post

It’s something I wish we didn’t have to be talking about, but the threat of it reaching Scotland is very real, and for us, it’s something we are taking extremely seriously.

For those who don’t know, bluetongue is a virus spread mainly by biting midges. It affects sheep and cattle and, particularly in sheep, it can cause very serious illness and death. In cattle it can cause illness and fertility problems.

It doesn’t affect people or the safety of the food we produce, but for livestock farmers the consequences could be devastating.

And this is where I think it’s important to explain just how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep disease off a farm like ours.

We have a closed herd and flock. That means we don’t buy animals in. The only exception is our breeding males, and they spend a long period in quarantine before they are allowed anywhere near our animals.

We work very closely with our vet and regularly blood test our livestock. We have worked incredibly hard over many years to build a high-health herd and flock and to eradicate disease from our farm. We are very proud of that.

Because of this, we are extremely careful about what comes onto the farm and what our animals come into contact with.

If our livestock are grazing close to somebody else’s, we double fence them. We can’t simply put our animals straight onto grass that other livestock have grazed. Finding new grass for them can therefore be surprisingly difficult, but protecting the health of our herd and flock is more important.

We have strict biosecurity measures in place and we are constantly looking at what more we can do.

And now we have bluetongue to worry about.

The difficulty with bluetongue is that it is spread by midges. We can be incredibly careful about what animals come onto the farm, where they have been and what they have been in contact with, but we can't control a tiny insect flying onto our land.

That is what makes this so frightening.

For us, our livestock aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet. They are years of breeding, careful selection, investment and an enormous amount of work. They are the foundation of our farm and our livelihood.

And ultimately, they are the animals we care for every single day.

We are watching the situation very closely, listening to our vet and following the advice from the animal health authorities. We will do everything within our power to protect our animals.

One thing that could really help is a good cold winter. Cold weather and frost reduce midge activity and survival, which can help to interrupt the spread of the virus.

So for once, we’ll be hoping for a proper Scottish winter. ❄️

Fingers and toes crossed for some frost. 🤞🏻

I wanted to share this because I think it’s important that people who buy their food from us understand what is happening behind the scenes.

We spend an enormous amount of time trying to keep our animals healthy.

And right now, we are doing everything we can to keep it that way.

We’ve had an amazing number of people coming into the shop for the first time over the past few weeks.

So many people have told us they’ve driven past us for years — some for twenty years! — and had no idea what was inside our beautiful old cart shed.

People who live nearby, people who come to the East Neuk on holiday every year, and people who are visiting for the first time.

It’s made us realise just how important word of mouth is. It’s probably one of our best forms of marketing.

So we’re curious…

What made you stop for the first time?

And if you were recommending Ardross Farm Shop to a friend, what would you say about us?

We’d genuinely love to know what you like about coming here, what you think we do well, and what makes you tell someone else to come and visit.

Go on… tell us what you really think! 😂

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Behind the Scenes Farm Tour today.

It’s one of our favourite parts of the job — showing people what we do, talking about farming and answering all those questions that you don’t always get the chance to ask.

We love sharing the realities of farming: the successes, the challenges, the good days and the days when absolutely nothing goes to plan! 😂

For us, connecting people with where their food comes from — and with the people who grow it — is so important. The more we can understand about our food, the land and the farmers behind it, the better.

So thank you to everyone who came along today, asked questions, listened, laughed and took an interest in what we do.

We loved having you here. 🌱
