A few surprises as I walked the field this evening..

It was cooler, with a breeze.

Very very welcomed. We have alot of catching up to do over the next few days as all that I’ve done this week is cut in the early early hours.

Perhaps tomorrow i’ll take a moment to capture rhe Roses with the proper camera before I deadhead hundreds or stems.

Stunning, but such a waste….

… about a man who gets up to w**d and wash buckets early in the morning.

And a woman who talks about flowers in her sleep and struggles to count to 10 before adding an elastic band.

And children who would rather be anywhere but the field yet know which month they will get married in based on the flowers.

And a family who are making a Flower Farm happen any which way that they can.

There’s a risk that because we love what we do, it’s romanticised.

Don’t get me wrong, the bridal bouquet that I plan to make for tomorrow will be soooo romantic.

But the work is real.

Sweaty
Cold and wet
Dirty
Physical
and Risky.

The reality is that despite all of this Silver Grey Foliage exists because of our customers and our supporters.

Wanting it and doing it isn’t enough.

So from the bottom of our muddy boots this British Flowers Week:

Thank you.

From Antony, Rebecca and the Youth department. 🙏

Photograph by who documents so much of our behind and infront of the scenes work, so that one day when we look back we can remember that this is real and not a dream.

Colour….

I grow alot of white, blush, buttery yellow, peach, pale pink….

I’ve grown to really love the sight of tonnes of white ammassed. It looks good. Satisfying. Yummy.

I also love colour. This evening’s bridal consultation set the challenge of jewel colours in May. I do love a challenge Abbie 😉

Anyway, sharing some colour on a Wednesday evening from this Flower Farmer to you all.

So we’re onto the 3rd beds of Orlaya.

Last week’s rain and coolness helped to hold these beds back.

Orlaya is an incredible frothy white filler for late May and June. You do have to crack on and cut it once it’s ready but other than that it’s easy to cut and beautiful to work with!

All of our Orlaya this season is grown from our own seed ☺️

Orlaya will join the Icelandic Poppies and other treats in our seed sale this autumn.

It really is proving to be our strangest year if growing yet….

Dahlia, at a cuttable height, grown outdoors, sustainably, in Yorkshire….

If truth be told, they caught us by surprise because these are not the overwintered tubers!

I best get on and w**d the beds😂😇

Whatever will happen next 🤷🏽‍♀️🧐

Florists, I’ve added the first stems of Scented Geranium to our webshop for this week’s orders.

Businesses are a funny thing.

If my daughter had her way, our Flower Farm would be called Silver Green Foliage, rather than Silver Grey Foliage.

She holds the position that we do grow alot of Foliage. But there’s more Green Foliage than Grey.

She’s probably right. But we are where we are 🤷🏽‍♀️😇

I literally can’t wait to start cutting this for next week’s orders!

Omphalodes has a silver-grey stem and so so cute little white flowers.

And movement!!!!

Heaven on a stem (🤣) and in our webshop now!

A true mixed bucket for a new customer yesterday.

I live mixed buckets because them offer our customers variety and value.

This one included:

Peonies
Nigella
Salvia
Mint
Sweet Williams
and Penny Cress.

Did you know that when you choose a bucket, you can also request a colour palette?!

Friday share number 1! 🙃

The only pictures of today’s bouquet for Beth.

Butterfly Ranunculus, French Ranunculus, Apple mint and Poppies.

By today, those French Ranunculus will have opened their soft pillowy petals to the hilt as the cushion below the light and airy pale pink Butterlies floating on top.

A smattering of poppies to finish. I should have made more time for images 🙄

I prefer to cut our French Ranunculus at this stage. Before their buttercup shape shows itself. It gives us and our customers control over when they reach the perfect stage and how long the flowers last.

This was the ultimate mico wedding. 1 bridal bouquet. 2 buckets of flowers.

If you’re wanting to DIY your wedding flowers, remember that as with everything that you do on your day, you get to choose how much, or how little you have.

It’s your celebration.
