🔎 Brand in focus: Sheldon

If you've been on the hunt for a Weymouth set for a double bridle, we reckon that Sheldon is a brand well worth considering! 🐴Their Weymouth and bradoon combinations are designed to offer clear, refined communication, with a range of mouthpiece and cheekpiece styles to suit different horses and their individual preferences.

Sheldon also offers a selection of gags and pinchless full cheek snaffles in both single and double-jointed designs, giving you plenty of choice across different disciplines and stages of training.

🏆 What a month it's been for our sponsored rider, Melissa Chapman!

We were keeping a close eye on Mel at last month’s British Dressage Summer Regionals at Northallerton Equestrian Centre and were thrilled to see her and TCE Royal VDH – Thomas at home - book their ticket to the Nationals at Somerford Park this September! 🎉

As if that wasn't enough, Mel and Week Orchard Gorgeous George also secured a wildcard entry to the Four-Year-Old Dressage Horse Championships at the same event, so there’s plenty to look forward to! 🌟

Mel rode an incredible 12 tests during the regionals and only finished outside the top ten once – and that was with an 11th place!

What an amazingly consistent rider and one we're so proud to have on Team Horse Bit Bank. 💙

🏇Brilliant Burgham! 🏇

We had a wonderful weekend watching our full team of sponsored event riders Lucinda Atkinson Eventing, Sara Bowe Eventing, Holly Richardson Eventing and Jemima Stratton Eventing in action at Burgham International Horse Trials - and there’s so much to share we don’t know quite where to start!

Highlights include:

🌟 A win for Holly and TBH Count to Ten in the Novice

🌟 A 2nd for Lucinda and PRF Sing Hallelujah in the BE100

🌟 A 10th place and a great double clear for Sara Bowe and Captain Morgan GZ in the CCI-S 2*

🌟 A brilliant comeback for Jemima and Global Exotic in the CCI-S 4*

Incredibly our riders rode 16 horses between them across the four days of competition at Burgham!

What an amazing team of riders we have - well done all!

New in! The Nathe mullen mouth and Nathe 3-ring bits

👅 Has your horse started sticking their tongue out while you're riding? It can look like a harmless habit, but a horse putting their tongue out to one side is often trying to tell you something.

A soft and flexible Nathe mouthpiece with a kind mullen design to give their tongue extra space might be just the ticket.

The three ring cheekpieces give you lots of options for rein placement for hacking, schooling and fast work or jumping.

Shop these and the rest of the Nathe collection on our website now!

❓How often should I clean my bit?❓

We recommend that after every ride you give the bit a quick clean, and here’s how to do that depending on the material:

🩶Metal (stainless steel, sweet iron, titanium): Rinse under a tap or in a bucket of warm water after use and make sure they’re completely dry before storing.
🧡Rubber, plastic or gel: Wash with warm water or rinse under the tap
🤎Leather: Wipe clean of saliva after every ride and treat lightly with oil or conditioner once a week or when dry.

Then, once a month (or more frequently if you ride nearly every day), give your bit a more thorough clean and check the joints for wear and any sharp edges, cracks in rubber or plastic and splits in leather mouthpieces.

Are you finding your horse a little too much ‘go’ 🏎️ and you’d like more ‘woahhh’? 🐢

It can be tempting to start looking for a stronger bit to give you extra brakes, but that might not be the answer. A stronger bit can be effective in some cases, but in others, it can have the opposite effect. Some horses resent the extra pressure and try to run through it or lock their jaw and will actually respond better to something totally different.

Remember, if you’d like a little steer on which is the right bit for your horse you can call our free bitting advice line on 01609 765 324.

Jodie will get back to you as soon as possible to chat about your situation and help you figure out a solution!
