Having not had a single customer all morning, I was really pleased to hear the door open just before midday. But alas it was just someone sheltering from the rain while waiting for a bus! If anyone does fancy buying a book today we have a warm dry shop full of amazing books.

AUTHOR EVENT FOR ADULTS.....We are getting ready for our first event for adults in ages. It's on Thursday 8th September and starts at 7pm. Stu Hennigan wrote 'Ghost Signs' following his experiences delivering essential food and medicine to some of Leeds' most vulnerable communities during the pandemic. Stu will be reading from his book, followed by an audience Q&A session. Tickets are £5, which can be redeemed against the book on the night. You can book your place by phone (01132123465), email [email protected]) or online www.thelittlebookshopleeds.co.uk
Hope to see you there.

You pay for a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription and receive a great recently released book (and a few extra bits) each month. 70 books over 7 decades from across the Commonwealth. We would love to hear how many you have read from the list or do you have any particular recommendations you would like to share? Please comment below. I'll go first, I read 'A Clockwork Orange' in my late teens/early twenties. It was like nothing I'd read before, and from memory it feels like a great read for young adults. It would be interesting to read again now I'm somewhat older!
BTW you can pick up a copy of the list from our shop and buy any of the titles.

We have a few limited edition copies of Kiran Millwood Hargrave's eagerly awaited second adult novel. What is special about these limited editions? Not only are the hard back books signed by the author, but the inside covers are beautifully decorated and come with an integrated bookmark, yet priced the same as the standard edition. Especially great as a gift or for anyone who likes to collect books. Be quick though, as we only have a few available. £14.99.

We are so excited to get signed, exclusive editions of Douglas Stuart's new novel, Young Mungo. His first book, Shuggie Bain, won the 2020 Booker prize, and I hear the second novel is every bit as good. Btw this edition is only available instore. If you want it posting out to you contact us via email. Online sales will default to the standard unsigned edition.

Opening like an early Tom Waits barstool-tale, The Motel Life tells the story of two brothers, Frank and Jerry Lee. Taking to the road in an attempt to escape the hit and run accident caused by Jerry Lee, the novel goes back to tell the story of their unhappy lives. With intense feeling and compassion, Vlautin explores the frustrations and failed dreams of the two brothers - one a natural storyteller, the other an artist - and renders perfectly the sense of entrapment they feel. Will the kid's death shock them out of their torpor or send them ever deeper into trouble? Can Annie James, a girl from their past, offer them any sort of redemption, however slim?

Interspersed with drawings that come to form an integral part of the narrative, The Motel Life is a poetic, moving, beautifully naïve and tragic fictional debut. Alongside such seminal works as Annie Proulx's Postcards, Raymond Carver's What we talk about when we talk about love and Denis Johnson's Jesus's Son, it should come to be seen as a classic of downbeat American prose.

Fully updated with new preface and five new speeches for paperback edition.

A Guardian Book of the Year.

Looking at lists of the greatest speeches of all time, you might think that powerful oratory is the preserve of men. But the truth is very different - countless brave and bold women have used their voices to inspire change, transform lives and radically alter history.

In this timely and personal selection of exceptional speeches, Yvette Cooper MP tells the rousing story of female oratory. From Boudica to Greta Thunberg and Chimamanda Adichie to Malala Yousafzai, Yvette introduces each speech and demonstrates how powerful and persuasive oratory can be decidedly female. Written by one of our leading public voices, this is an inspirational call for women to be heard across the globe.
