The album brings to a close a series in which he has combined the exploration of Beethoven's complete sets of variations for piano with one of the form itself, through the juxtaposition of works by composers from both earlier and later periods.

🎧Our Classical Recording of the Week goes to Mel Bonis: Orchestral Works with Elizabeth Watts (soprano), Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Rumon Gamba, out now on Records

Mel (Mélanie Hélène) Bonis was born in Paris in 1858, and showed a prodigious talent for music from an early age, attending the Paris Conservatoire from the age of sixteen, studying alongside Debussy and Pierné under César Franck.

Having composed over 300 works, her chamber music, songs and piano works have enjoyed some overdue attention over the past few years, and as this album illustrates, Bonis was also an imaginative orchestrator who reupholstered some of her most successful smaller-scale pieces with character and individuality.
