N is for Nabarlek

I get quite a few requests for Australian animals and since they’re almost all this cute I can see why!!
Nabarleks are very small macropods related to wallabies and kangaroos. They’re quite rare and only found wild in small areas of northern Australia.
Fast movers, they can only move their back legs at the same time when on land to hop along, but in water they can move these legs independently, making them excellent swimmers too.
Even as vegetarians they share a likeness with sharks! As their molars wear down from the constant chewing of ferns and tough plants, they move forwards in the mouth and are endlessly replaced by new teeth behind!

O is for Octopus

I think the award for the most amazing animal I’ve managed to see in the wild has to go to an octopus! I was so incredibly lucky to spot one while snorkelling on a dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef! It had a little cave of stones that it was hiding in and kept crawling back out (probably to check if I’d gone!) and then changing colour to camouflage itself. I could have watched it all day!

They’re the most intelligent invertebrates in the world even though their brains are no bigger than a walnut! And even the largest species of giant pacific octopus with a 30ft arm span, could squeeze itself through a hole smaller than the size of a £2 coin!!

What’s the best animal you’ve managed to see in the wild?

P is for Panda 🐼

An undeniably adorable animal! I once watched a panda doing roly polys in a loop around its enclosure in San Diego zoo, And it didn’t stop being cute and funny for a very long time!!!

Like other bears, pandas should really be omnivores, eating plants and animals; but for some reason these cuties decided they were not only going to eat just plants but just one very specific plant. Bamboo!
Their digestive systems aren’t particularly well suited to this choice though, which means they need to eat an awful lot of it to get enough nutrients to keep them going. This means pandas have to spend at least half their day eating! And can p**p 100 times a day!!! (Even while sleeping!)
They also don’t get to enjoy other bears luxury of hibernating through winter, as they couldn’t get enough calories out of bamboo to last them long enough.

Despite causing themselves all this extra trouble to stay alive! Due to massive conservation efforts, giant pandas are no longer considered endangered!! 🎉

It’s the 9,684th of January today and I am TIRED! Anyone else?
It took a while for us to get back into our usual routine this year, (plus baby penguins has officially dropped his nap, unless we happen to get in the car in the middle of the day!) so I no longer have a fixed slot where I can work.
But I have managed to find a few chances to paint and am really enjoying playing around with some prehistoric characters.

How’s January going for you?

Q is for Quail

When I began drawing my alphabet, I always assumed that Q would be for quail. But I hadn’t ever drawn a lot of birds at that time, while I was still finding my style, so a fluffy quoll felt much easier and safer.
People have always been happy to choose the Australian marsupial for their letter Q’s and it’s taken years for a customer to finally request a quail! I’m actually really happy with how cute and chubby this one looks though so I think the quoll will have some competition now!!

Are you team Quail or team Quoll?

R is for Rhino

Translated from Ancient Greek, they’re literally called nose horns, and I’m back with another poo fact for you all!!
Rhinos use their p**p to communicate like social media! Leaving messages about themselves in the different smells for other rhinos to sniff.

There are 5 species of rhinos on the planet, (despite two of these being called white rhino and black rhino, they are all grey in colour) they can weigh over 3tonnes (3,500kg!) and can run at 30-40mph, so I would definitely get out of their way when they’re feeling. grumpy in the morning!!
