Lots and Lots of Massive Pipes!
After several weeks of mostly hand‑digging, the team has now installed a further 16.5 metres of new pipework — a huge achievement given the tight working conditions.
Squeezing each section down into the trench, manoeuvring it past the other services, joining it precisely, and setting the correct levels so the water gets the fastest possible flow is skilled, meticulous work.

Concrete is arriving soon, ready to be poured around the new manholes and to support the pavement alongside the freshly installed pipes. This will give the whole structure the strength it needs for the next stages.

Later in the week, an extra workforce will be on site to begin reinstating the kerbstones and some of the pavers, helping the area start to take shape again.

Looking ahead, plans are in motion to dig out and fit the new tree planters, bringing more greenery back into the space and giving the street a much‑needed lift once the heavy works are complete.

This week has also revealed some fascinating finds: well‑preserved bottles, a cow horn, and even some sheep’s teeth — little glimpses into Kingsbridge’s past. The bottles will no doubt be welcomed by the Cookworthy Museum to add to the town’s growing collection of local artefacts.

Week by week, the improvements are really starting to show.

Pipes and Pipes — This Week’s Culvert Update
Excavations have continued along the line of the old culvert this week, preparing the way for the bespoke 1‑metre‑diameter pipes currently being constructed in Wales.

It’s been another week of careful hand‑digging between gas pipes, BT cables, and sewage lines, as the team works through one of the most congested stretches of underground services in Kingsbridge.

And once again, the ground has revealed more of its hidden past.
Among the soil and pipework, the crew has uncovered:

More fragments of local pottery

A glass bottle embossed with “Kingsbridge”

Several old clay smoking pipes

These historical finds will be added to the growing collection and passed on to Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum , along with copies of the photos of the old structures uncovered during the dig.

Next week, the new pipework is expected to arrive.
Each section will be carefully lowered into place, sealed to the previous pieces, and routed around the existing services within the cavity.

If you’re passing, stop and take a look — it’s remarkable to see how far the repair has progressed over the past few weeks.
And remember the free parking in Fore Street and Quay car parks after 2pm every day, perfect if you’re popping into town while the works continue. Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum

People often ask how to support Fore Street traders during the roadworks. The answer is simple: come into town. Have a wander, browse the shops, and pick up one or two things you need from an independent business instead of a multinational.

There’s a huge range of shops and businesses to choose from, so stop by and buy a cuppa, cake, carrot or chops. Grab a mug for Father’s Day, a gift for Granny, or just some flowers to brighten up your own home.

Every small purchase helps keep our high street thriving.

In between the showers, students from KCC — joined by Headteacher Mrs Tina Graham — made an onsite visit to the culvert works. After a short history of the project and a full safety briefing, the group were shown around the site and even lowered into the depths to see the historic culvert and bridge structures up close. Not everyone’s idea of a perfect school trip, but certainly a memorable one.

The line of the new pipe is also progressing well. Bespoke pipework is now being crafted to carry the additional streams that join the culvert, as well as the surface‑water drains that run close by. Every section has to be shaped precisely to weave between the existing services — a real feat of engineering.

We’re delighted with the new fencing covers now in place around the compound. They guide pedestrians safely around the works while proudly showcasing the wealth of shops and businesses we have in town — plus a reminder of the FREE parking from 2pm. Have you taken advantage of it yet.

Within today’s excavations, three men were hand‑digging the trench between a maze of underground services. You can’t see them in the photo, but they’re down there working beneath fully supported trench walls — skilled, precise work and definitely not for the faint‑hearted.
