I'm working late into the night at the kitchen table catching up on the emails (the downside of being self employed, no clocking off and going home).

And looking up from the laptop to have a stretch and scan the kitchen surfaces for something to eat, I caught sight of these dahlias on the stove, under the spotlight of a reading lamp. This photo doesn't do it justice, but the reflection on the green glass vase, the saturated deepness of the flowers and the glow of the copper pan behind the stove just looked sooo good to me that I had to share.
Perhaps I should have framed and styled it better, maybe adjust the flowers a tad, spent a while messing about with those buttons which change the white balance, contrast, exposure etc but no, this is enough, life doesn't always need to be perfect to be beautiful.

Right, back to those emails.

There are a few spaces left for tomorrow's Pick Your Own Flowers. Come and wander among the flowers and escape the humdrum of everyday life for an hour or so.
Spaces are limited because of the lack of parking, so if it looks like it's sold out, message me if you'd like to come along, I'm counting the number of vehicles, not the number of people!

As Matt says so much better than I can, you'll be given a bucket and a pair of snips to wander the garden and field, cutting whatever takes your fancy. But make sure you bring a bucket, large vase or container to take them home in.

Look forward to meeting you among the flowers.

8 August 2020.

A photo of the first wedding buttonhole I've ever made. Practising wedding florals for my daughter's Covid-bound wedding a month later.

With no previous floristry experience and no possibility of going to learn floristry at a class or workshop, I learnt from this book by and a newly found community of like minded flower growers on Facebook .

Before opening this book, 'mechanics' were folk who fixed my broken down car and cajoled it to pass it's MOT. And to be honest, like the rest of us 'non florists', I really didn't understand the harm floral foam caused

I had seen that green crumbly stuff in the rather staid basket arrangements of chrysanthemums, carnations and asparagus fern if I visited relatives in hospital or the arrival of a new baby. I was once a flowergirl at an aunt's wedding in the 1970s with a pomander shaped ball of red bud roses on a loop of ribbon. I learnt that the roses were stuck into a green crumbly ball, like a cinnamon studded orange at Christmas because I got bored and wanted to know how the roses were stuck on. I had great fun digging a big hole, deep into that foam ball, green crumbs falling on my blue velvet dress and down onto the kneeling mats below me. Oh did I get into trouble for that. There are wedding photos of that 7 year old with a tear stained, bloated face, holding a ball of roses in a peculiar way so that the hole would not show.
Maybe that was why it was sooo easy for me not to use plastic based floral foam and instead learn from Sarah and many others during that strange period of lockdown, to create wedding florals that are kind to our planet and the multitude of micro organisms that live in our oceans.

I think this book is still available. It really is time to reject floral foam and all it's so called eco alternatives and learn how to create mechanics from everyday, compostable or reuseable materials. And once you know how, you'll be able to create floral arrangements anywhere, with materials readily available. No need to wait to order in blocks of foam, just rake the lawn for some moss, cut a few twigs, bend some wire and away you go.

I've noticed when content creators haven't been posting for a while...well, actually I never notice that they haven't posted, I just read posts which start something like "I know I haven't been on here for a while, so here's a recap of my ridiculously, instagram-perfect life ..."

Well.
I know I haven't been posting for a while. I've been busy running my business and it takes me blooming ages to put together any kind of content, but I did find time to record and edit a wee introduction to me and my business, as I've had some new followers recently and it seems rude not to. So welcome to my less than perfect corner of the Internet. With irregular postings of life on an island croft, seasonal floral inspiration and some behind the scenes peeks at the flower farm.
I was wondering where in the big wide world folk follow me from so leave me a 🌼 in the comments and say hello👋

Oh, and if you're interested in staying at the Strawbale Bothy and seeing the flower field first hand, I'd love to meet you.

The advantages of being self employed: Being able choose to play with roses instead of getting on with the Task List.

The disadvantages of being self employed: having a Task List that must be done...at the weekend!

Happy weekend to those who can find some time to do something you want to do. X
