Shrinking Milka chocolate bar tricked consumers, says German court

In a landmark German case targeting chocolate "shrinkflation", a court has found that the manufacturer of Milka's classic Alpine Milk bar cheated consumers and broke competition law.

Cutting back on the amount of chocolate while having the same kind of wrapper meant that customers were being misled, Bremen regional court ruled.

The three-week court case was brought by Hamburg's consumer protection office (VZHH), which accused manufacturer Mondelēz of deceiving consumers by cutting the weight of the "Alpenmilch" bar from 100g to 90g.

Boer War Cadbury bar expected to bring sweet payday

A 126-year-old Cadbury chocolate bar issued during the Second Boer War in 1900 is expected to fetch hundreds of pounds at auction.

Cadbury, along with other chocolatiers, was commissioned by Queen Victoria to produce thousands of tins of chocolate for British soldiers fighting in South Africa.

The bar, which has come from a private collector, is being auctioned on Tuesday, 19 May by Lockdales Auctioneers & Valuers, based at Martlesham Heath, Suffolk.

We’re looking for someone who can help with:

This temporary, flexible role would suit a retired builder, carpenter, maintenance person, or anyone practical and reliable looking for a few hours each week over the next couple of weeks.

Chocolate could soon be produced using lab-grown ingredients, including cocoa butter, according to a Mondelez-backed foodtech company.

Celleste Bio, an Israeli startup specialising in “cocoa-tech magic” has successfully grown cocoa butter out of a lab, a key ingredient in the majority of chocolate products on the shelves.

The technology is part of a growing field of foodtech which looks to find cultivated alternatives to cocoa.

The cocoa industry has become increasingly volatile due to climate disruption, ageing cocoa crops and long replanting timelines.
