It’s back! 📖 ☀️🍹

Our annual Summer Reading Celebration, held in the courtyard behind the shop (next door to Eliane’s) takes place on Thursday July 9th from 6:30pm. This fun event is one of our favourites in the year. Understandable, as who could not feel the joy when there’s a line-up of awesome authors introducing their new books over jugs of Pimms, tasty treats and glasses of wine.

This year’s line-up includes The Sunday Times bestselling author Harriet Evans who has written an unputdownable love story spanning continents, years and families. We can’t wait to hear all about The Treasures!

(actually two people) will tell us about their sizzling summer read set in the dying days of August as eight ‘friends’ gather at a country house for a writing retreat.

will be giving us a taste of her new spooky, funny crime mystery, The Grapples of Wrath (fhe new book in the Grave Expectations series), and local author Lesley Bungay Author will be talking about her moving historical novel, A Year without Summer.

Finally wildlife enthusiast Charlie Bingham - Author & Historian shares with us her love for our feathered friends in her book, The Life Affirning Magic of Birds.

Booksellers also stand under the bunting sharing some of their favourite reads of the year so far.

Tickets are just £7. We recommend booking quickly (and praying for good weather). 😎

📚 1,114 BOOKS.

That’s the EXTRA number of books the average independent bookshop will need to sell every year just to cover rising business rates.

Huge thanks to for hosting us and bringing this story to life so powerfully in their shop, and the on Sunday for covering the issue (link in bio).

New analysis shows the scale of the pressure facing independent bookshops in England:
• Over 400 shops (those not eligible for Small Business Rates Relief) facing average annual increases of £4,563
• Total aggregated business rates burden on bookshops rising by 45.1% by 2029/30 (from £4.14m to over £6m)

On average, this means a bookshop must sell over 1,100 extra book sales every year just to stand still - a major challenge on already tight margins.

This risks reducing investment in shops, community outreach, and high street vibrancy, with bookshop businesses potentially at risk.

We’re calling for:
✔ Permanent business rates relief
✔ Reform of the SBRR cliff edge
✔ Index-linked thresholds
✔ Better Resourcing of the Valuation Office Agency

Independent bookshops are vital to our culture and communities - they deserve business rates that allow them to thrive, not fight to survive.

Shhhhh!! Three most wanted authors take to the stage..

Do you love disappearing into an espionage thriller? Fascinated by spies? Seduced by spooks? Then join us for a riveting panel event with three bestselling authors at The Town Hall in Hungerford on July 2nd chaired by

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, was approached by the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and used his experiences as the basis for his debut novel, A Spy By Nature.
Cumming’s espionage fiction has since won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger and Bloody Scotland Crime Book of the Year, and his novels have been translated into fourteen languages. The Observer has described Charles as ‘the rightful inheritor of John le Carré’s crown’. His brand new page-turner is Icarus 17 (book 4 in the Box 88 series).

James Wolff grew up in Beirut and has lived in Damascus, Cairo and Istanbul. He worked as a British intelligence officer for over ten years. Spies & Other Gods is he new electrifying novel about the mystery, paranoia and ruthlessness of the secretive world of British espionage.

And finally Alistair Wood is the author of the memoir My Family and Other Spies - a gripping exploration of an extraordinary, scarcely believable life: a globe-trotting spy story that spans a half century from the gathering storm before the Second World War to the fall of Communism, and a son’s reckoning with the secrets of the past. The Sunday Times describes it as ‘part John Le Carre and part Ealing Comedy’.
