Change of plan!

Kirklees is probably the only authority that doesn’t allow ducks on the allotments… so… will wait until I get a smallholding for the ducks instead.

😭

Umm.

Apparently chicken maths works with ducks too… but quicker.

At 3pm I had decided on two ducks.

By 3.30 I changed that to four.

I got asked if I could take more if needed, because they had 80 to rehome.

I said yes.

I got offered ten.

Took me a few moments of panic, but bu**er me if I haven’t just said yes to ten ducks.

Where am I going to put them?!?!!

And

How do I tell the husband?????

⭐️⭐️⭐️Exciting news!⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m picking up some fabulous new additions to my flock tomorrow!

BEAUTIFUL WHITE CHERRY VALLEY DUCKS!!

So this means, in a week, I will have duck eggs for sale alongside the chicken eggs.

The price of our chickens eggs have not increased, and I have no intention to, even though the cost of feed and bedding etc has gone through the roof recently - so to offset this, the duck eggs will be set at £2 for 6 (which is still extremely cheap by the way - they’re £2.95 just in Tesco!)

Added to this, you know the ducks will now be living their best lives with me - having been rescued from a heaving shed with no room, no access to outdoors and worst of all, NO water to swim or bathe in!

Cannot wait to pick my new girls up and get them settled in.

Watch this space!

Ps names needed!

Hey guys.
I’ve lost a few chickens recently. They seem to go in clusters, and it is often at the change of the season - when they either slow down or start up egg production. That change can trigger underlying issues and cause things such as egg yolk peritonitis; which is where a yolk falls into the abdomen rather than it’s usual route. An occasional rogue yolk can usually be reabsorbed by the body. Continuous ones can’t, and they get infected within the chicken. 9/10 chickens will die once this happens unfortunately. It CAN be treated with antibiotics if caught early - but it’s very hard to catch early and not really noticeable until close to death (like with a lot of things with chickens).
My focus has always been to give my chickens a good retirement; knowing that they will likely have these issues and that their time is limited. I’m happy to say they have had a good retirement!
Anyway, I have fourteen chickens left now and i’m getting between 5-10 eggs a day as they start slowing down for winter, which is currently a lot less than I’ve been getting over summer.
I want and need them to have the break over winter, so i probably won’t have many spare eggs to sell now until spring.
I also think it’s time I adopted a few more. I’m only allowed 12 on the allotment, and shock horror, I’m coming very close to that number now! I have never behaved before in my life, and I don’t intend to start now!! 😱
Is anyone else planning to adopt? I’ll post rehoming dates and details on here when I have them, just in case.

One of my oldies passed away yesterday 💔

However...

She had another full 18 months of life after she was originally due to be killed (at 15 months old) after spending her entire life in unnatural light, ten to a cage, not able to move, never feeling fresh air or the ground under her feet, just laying eggs day after day at an unnatural rate and destroying her little body.

When she passed away, she did so in a comfy shed at night after roaming outside during the day. She had a name, she had room to stretch, she tasted freedom, she dust bathed and snoozed in the sun, she ate grass and bugs, she learned to trust us and run to us because we had delicious treats, she climbed branches and other playthings, she snuck off once or twice, she had a full set of glossy feathers, and she had friends. She had longer in this life than she did in a battery farm.

But she should have lived another five years at least. This is what intensive farming does to their bodies, and it’s not fair.
