All the way back in 2019, one of our first ever author events was with David Gange to celebrate the release of his wonderful book, The Frayed Atlantic Edge. David was *brilliant*. He spoke so well about what it was like to kayak around the UK; the isolation of the journey yet meeting so many kind people along the way. The Frayed Atlantic Edge is still a popular book in the shop 7 years later.

We’re delighted to tell you that David is BACK in Holmfirth on Saturday 20th June.at 7pm. He will be telling us all about his latest book, Afloat: Small Boats, Swell and Seaspray.

From Ireland and the Shetlands up to Greenland, across to Baffin Island, Newfoundland, the US, and the Caribbean, David embarks on a seabound journey through North-Atlantic coasts & islands, exploring ways of life that have been built on small rowed or paddled boats.

Small traditional boats fulfil roles in their communities unlike any other inanimate things. Often treated as living members of the family, with minds and lives of their own, they’ve been essential to many cultures’ ways of living in the land and seascapes that surround them. Intimately adapted to specific bays and headlands, tides and prevailing winds, they bind people and place together.

This book is the story of eight journeys and thousands of miles of sailing, kayaking and rowing.

David is one of the loveliest, most knowledgable and interesting people you could ever hope to meet and we’re definitely in for a great evening.

Tickets are £5 and as always include free refreshments and £5 off the book on the night. You can find them in the shop or online here:

We’ve had the most beautiful week in Cornwall this week. Plenty of sun ☀️, barbecues, books, bodyboarding, games, crazy golf and a much needed rest. Here’s what we’ve been reading this week. Holiday books take a lot of planning… Louise started her list in January 😆

We visited two gorgeous bookshops we’ve not been to before and and Louise got a great recommendation for the new Jem Calder book which sounds amazing.

We have now visited the incredible that Clare has been telling us about forever. What a revelation! Won’t be stopping anywhere else from now on 😂 Their meringues have kept the kids quiet most of the way home.

Thanks to Eleanor, Penny and Ruth (who came back to help us over the holidays 🙌) who have kept the shop running for us. It’s because of them that we’re able to get away and we’re hugely grateful.

Back to reality now but when reality is running a bookshop that’s a lot easier to cope with 💛

Eleanor has LOVED John of John by Douglas Stuart.

An outstanding novel about love it all its forms; long held resentments; shame; longing, and the damage that can be caused by a lack of honesty and understanding.

Beautifully written - easily the best book Eleanor has read in a long time!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(⭐️)

£20 hardback, comes with a free tote bag while stocks last 💛
