A huge thank you to the Ver Valley Society for their support during Sportfish Rivers Month 🌿

For over 45 years, Ver Valley Society volunteers have worked to protect and improve the River Ver, a chalkstream running through Hertfordshire - from riverbank clearance to water quality monitoring, including regular balsam bashing sessions to hand-pull invasive Himalayan Balsam before it can spread further along the banks.

It's this kind of ongoing, practical work that keeps our chalk streams healthy for the fish - and the people - who depend on them.

New data from the Environment Agency this week, and it's not good news for the waters we all fish.

Just 14.3% of England's rivers and lakes have been rated in good ecological health - and for the first time, not a single one has met the standard for good chemical status, largely down to persistent pollutants from sewage, agriculture, and run-off that can take decades to clear.

A reminder of how much work is still needed to protect the waters we all rely on.
