STATEMENT!
Today we received contact from the Angling Trust CEO regarding our event and comments made in a previous post. For the record, and so that the facts surrounding the event are publicly known, we feel it is important to set out exactly what happened. We have also recorded all correspondence if needed.
When we first developed the idea for the event, we repeatedly contacted the Angling Trust seeking support, advice and involvement, included multiple attempts to CEO directly, as well as attempts to contact our local Angling Trust representative. Despite these efforts, we received very little practical assistance in the lead-up to the event.
When we eventually made contact with our Regional Development Officer for the East, he asked whether we had a Level 2 coach involved. We confirmed that we did. We were told that we would receive a call, but never happened. Another trust employe subsequently later apologised and confirmed that "he would deal with it."
Head of Coaching at the Angling Trust, later contacted us after seeing the event personally. He offered access to an online Safeguarding course, which we accepted and completed. We did appreciate that, but this was essentially the extent of the practical support we received from the Angling Trust before the main event.
What we find particularly difficult to understand is that we have seen the Angling Trust actively support and promote other children's fishing events and initiatives. We therefore remain unsure why, despite our repeated attempts to make contact, we struggled to receive any meaningful support or even a response when our sole aim was to promote the sport and get kids fishing.
Another member of the Angling Trust also confirmed to us in writing that it was not a legal requirement to use qualified people to deliver sessions, although he considered it best practice. We already had coaches involved and, ultimately, two Level 2 coaches were present on the day. Despite repeatedly seeking assistance, we therefore organised and delivered the event ourselves, with our own team of volunteers, coaches and supporters.
Since the event we have been contacted on social media by the Angling Trust, requesting we remove the previous post. We would have been hugely grateful for the same amount of time from them before the event as could of only helped get more kids fishing on the day.
We are incredibly proud of what was achieved. Hundreds of children were given the opportunity to fish, many for the first time. More than 100 rods, reels and whips were used during the event and subsequently given to children so they could continue fishing, thanks to the businesses and individuals who supported the day.
No external funding was used and no Trust or Association helped. Just passionate people. Our intention from the beginning was simple: to get as many children as possible into fishing and give them a positive first experience of the sport.
We approached the Angling Trust because we genuinely believed that, as the national governing body for angling, they would want to support an event whose sole purpose was to introduce hundreds of children to fishing. Unfortunately, despite our repeated attempts to obtain support, the practical involvement we were seeking never materialised.
We did not allow that to stop us.
We organised it ourselves, brought together an incredible team of volunteers and coaches, secured equipment and delivered an event that gave more than 500 children the opportunity to go fishing.
We may not have made the cut for the Angling Trust's “Get Kids Fishing” campaign, but we can say with 110% certainty that we “Got Kids Fishing” and that is something we are extremely proud of.
Thank you to every volunteer, coach, business, parent and individual who helped make the day possible. Without you, none of this would have happened. We hope this will be the end of the dispute, Angling Trust have suggested they will also be putting up a statement but either way, we "Got Kids Fishing" and we look forward to the next one! 🐟

***Got Kids Fishing***
A MASSIVE Thank You to everyone who came to our Free Kids Fishing Event!! There was in the region of 500 plus kids attend of the day, many memories made, many tangles and floats lost BUT most importantly, many new lifelong anglers to our sport!! ( BIG Photo Drop to follow)
A HUGE Thank You to the people! In regards to the comments about the day not being advertised under the ‘Get Kids Fishing’ banner, we did contact the Angling Trust/Jamie Cook directly, in an attempt to get support and guidance. Eventually we were offered access to an online Safeguarding course, which we appreciated and completed the same day. Unfortunately, the promised 'call backs' or practical support we were hoping for never materialised.. So, we got on with it ourselves. BUT it just proves that you don’t need corporate bodies to get kids fishing, JUST passionate people!!
A BIG Thank You for the donations Stanborough Lakes for letting us use the venue! OMC Tackle, NGT Tackle and Lakeside Tackle for donating the equipment, in which over a 100 rods/reels/whips was used on the day and then given away directly to the children to use on their next trip!
